Description
The 2018 Château Beau-Séjour Bécot Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is a seductive, classically styled Right Bank Bordeaux from one of the limestone plateaus’ most revered estates. Crafted from 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, it marries plush fruit with a fine, chalk-driven structure. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Émilion, Beau-Séjour Bécot has long been admired for producing wines that combine immediate pleasure with impressive longevity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Beau-Séjour Bécot shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful, almost crystalline brightness at the rim. The nose is sensual and layered, opening with boysenberries, ripe raspberries, baked plums and chocolate-coated cherries, then unfolding into nuances of star anise, dried Provençal herbs and a delicate hint of lavender.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a velvety, almost cashmere-like texture. Waves of perfumed black and red fruit—blackberry compote, dark cherry and plum—are supported by fine-grained tannins and a fresh, limestone-driven line of acidity. Subtle notes of cocoa, sweet spice and dried flowers linger on a long, graceful finish. Still a touch reserved in its youth, this 2018 is already harmonious but will truly blossom with time in bottle, offering superb drinking pleasure over the next 25+ years.
Production
Château Beau-Séjour Bécot sits on the prized limestone plateau just outside the village of Saint-Émilion, where thin clay soils rest over pure, fissured limestone—an ideal terroir for Merlot and Cabernet Franc, lending both finesse and minerality. The grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted to ensure only perfectly healthy berries make it into the cuvée. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats (a mix of stainless steel and concrete), with gentle extraction to preserve the wine’s elegance and aromatic purity. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion new, for around 16–18 months, allowing the tannins to refine and the complex bouquet to develop while maintaining a clear expression of its limestone origin.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion Grand Cru pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck breast, beef tenderloin, veal chops and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. It also works well with game birds, rich poultry, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in Bordeaux-style glasses. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours helps the aromatic layers unfold; as the wine matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is sufficient mainly to remove any sediment.
Producer
Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is one of the historic names of Saint-Émilion, with roots on the limestone plateau dating back to the 18th century. Acquired by the Bécot family in the late 1960s, the estate has steadily risen in quality and renown, ultimately earning its status as Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé. Its vineyards, ideally placed on the famed côte and plateau around the village, have made it a reference point for wines that combine depth, perfume and a signature mineral tension. Today, Beau-Séjour Bécot is widely regarded as one of the most exciting estates on the Right Bank, regularly earning high critical acclaim and playing an important role in defining the modern, terroir-driven style of top Saint-Émilion.
