Description
The 2018 Cardinale Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is a benchmark Bordeaux-style blend from one of Oakville’s most storied estates. Crafted only once per year as a single flagship wine, it represents a meticulous selection of the finest parcels from across Napa’s most prestigious mountain AVAs. This vintage showcases Cardinale’s signature style: power combined with precision, and richness balanced by remarkable freshness and purity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Cardinale shows a deep garnet-purple hue, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with warm cassis, black cherry compote, and wild blueberry, then unfolding into more complex notes of graphite, cedar, pipe tobacco, dried herbs (garrigue), and subtle baking spice from French oak.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Napa Cabernet that trades overt heaviness for elegance and drive. Ripe black and blue fruits pulse at the core—cassis, black plum, and blueberry—framed by fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity that keep the wine fresh and energetic. Nuances of cocoa, cigar box, and earthy tones add depth as it moves across the palate, leading to a long, polished finish that lingers with dark fruit, spice, and a mineral edge. Built for the long haul, this 2018 has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 15–20 years or more, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, truffle, and dried flowers.
Production
Cardinale draws fruit from multiple high-elevation and benchland sites across Napa Valley, including Diamond Mountain, Spring Mountain, Howell Mountain, and Mount Veeder. These mountain vineyards contribute structure, aromatic intensity, and freshness, while lower-elevation sites add opulence and plush fruit. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel, allowing each site to be picked at optimal ripeness. Vinification is carried out in small lots, with each of the 32 individual parcels fermented and aged separately to preserve its character. The final blend of the 2018 vintage is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from eight appellations and eleven vineyards, matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 81% new, to add texture, complexity, and subtle spice without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Food & Serving
This sophisticated Napa red is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, herb-crusted lamb, venison, or slow-braised short ribs, as well as truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. In its youth, the 2018 benefits from decanting—give it 1–2 hours to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet; with more bottle age, a shorter decant or slow-ox in the glass will suffice.
Producer
Cardinale is one of the historic estates in Oakville, Napa Valley, known for its singular focus: producing just one grand vin each year. Established with the vision of showcasing the best of Napa through a single, meticulously crafted blend, Cardinale became a pioneer in the art of multi-AVA blending, long before the concept was widely celebrated. By sourcing from top sites across mountain and benchland appellations, the winery has earned a reputation for wines that combine the structure and lift of high-elevation fruit with the depth and richness of classic Napa Cabernet. Over the years, Cardinale has regularly garnered critical acclaim and high scores, cementing its status as a reference-point producer in Napa’s luxury Cabernet category.
