Description

The 2018 Bond Vecina is a commanding single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the western bench of Oakville in Napa Valley, crafted for collectors and serious Cabernet lovers. Sourced from a steep, terraced, volcanic hillside just southeast of the Bond winery, Vecina (Spanish for “neighbor”) is known for its depth, power, and almost sculpted structure. First released with the 1999 vintage and now regarded as one of Napa’s modern “Grand Cru” sites, Vecina consistently delivers an intense yet finely detailed expression of Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Bond Vecina shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue that clings to the sides with viscous, slow-falling legs, immediately signaling richness and concentration. The nose is densely layered and classical in profile: blackcurrant and black cherry, blackberry pie, and cassis are woven together with cigar box cedar, pencil shavings, charcoal, tar, and a lifted, perfumed earthiness reminiscent of wild forest floor and crushed rock. On the palate, this is full-bodied and muscular yet impeccably composed. The core of dark, ripe black fruit is framed by firm, grainy tannins that feel rock-solid but finely chiselled, giving the wine both power and precision. There is plenty of freshness that drives the flavors across the palate—blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum—into savory notes of graphite, cocoa, and a persistent, saline-mineral finish. The 2018 vintage’s balance of ripeness and acidity gives this wine excellent aging potential; it will reward patience over 15–25+ years in a proper cellar, gradually revealing more nuance, polish, and tertiary complexity.

Production
The Vecina vineyard is an 11-hectare, east-facing site situated on terraced volcanic slopes at the western foot of Oakville, directly neighboring the Bond estate. The soils are almost entirely composed of fractured bedrock over fine-grained alluvial wash, providing excellent drainage and naturally limiting yields, which intensifies flavor and structure in the grapes. Old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon is carefully managed and harvested by hand, with the 2018 growing season described as near-perfect: each key stage—budbreak, flowering, veraison, and harvest—occurred slightly earlier than average, and picking was carried out in nine separate passes from late September over a three-week period to capture optimal ripeness parcel by parcel. In the cellar, Bond applies meticulous, small-lot vinification, fermenting each block separately before aging in high-quality French oak barrels (predominantly new), allowing the site’s character—its dark fruit, mineral drive, and powerful structure—to take center stage.

Food & Serving
The 2018 Bond Vecina is a natural partner for rich, deeply flavored dishes that can stand up to its intensity and structure: think dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, venison or other game in red wine reduction, braised short ribs, or slow-roasted beef with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, aged hard cheeses, and refined preparations featuring black garlic or roasted root vegetables. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight both aromatics and freshness. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to open the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles (10+ years) may need a gentler, shorter decant (30–60 minutes) primarily to separate the wine from sediment.

Producer
Bond is one of Napa Valley’s most revered producers of single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, founded by H. William Harlan as a sister project to the legendary Harlan Estate. Conceived as a “Grand Cru” vision for Napa, Bond focuses exclusively on a small selection of hillside sites that Harlan’s team has farmed and studied over decades, ultimately selecting just five vineyards from more than eighty trialed to represent the valley’s finest terroirs. Each site—Vecina among them—is bottled individually to capture its unique geological and climatic fingerprint. Bond’s wines have become benchmarks for collectible Napa Cabernet, known for their beauty, precision, and extraordinary aging capacity, with extremely limited allocations and a high proportion of production remaining in the United States. Every bottle carries an individual identification number verified through a dedicated system, underlining the estate’s commitment to authenticity in a market where Bond and Harlan are among the most sought-after and counterfeited wines in the world.
