Description

2018 Bond Pluribus is a commanding, single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley’s dramatic mountain slopes, crafted in minuscule quantities for serious collectors and lovers of powerful, ageworthy reds. Named from the Latin for “many,” Pluribus speaks to the myriad elements that shape a truly great wine—sun, soil, climate, and the dedicated hands that guide it. As one of Bond’s five coveted “Grand Cru” sites, this bottling captures a particularly intense, structured, and complex expression of Napa’s high-elevation terroir in a beautifully balanced 2018 vintage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Pluribus is opaque and saturated, with a deep purple-black core that clings to the sides of the glass. The nose is intensely layered and immediately evocative: dark plums and blackcurrant conserve unfold alongside wild mulberry, kirsch, and blackberry compote, intertwined with notes of cedar, pencil shavings, roasted coffee, and hints of cigar tobacco. Subtle accents of dried lavender, graphite, and warm earth add further complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this is large-scaled yet remarkably poised, with a rich, concentrated core of dark fruit framed by super-fine, grainy tannins. Flavors of black plum, cassis, and ripe black cherry are lifted by vibrant acidity, while nuances of burnt coffee, dark chocolate, cedar, and exotic spice build in slow, luxurious layers. The texture is dense but velvety, carrying through to a very long, fresh, and persistent finish that echoes with dark fruit, tobacco leaf, and dried flowers. Built for the long haul, this 2018 Pluribus has the structure and balance to develop gracefully for 30 years or more in a proper cellar.

Production
Pluribus comes from a compact, roughly 7-hectare mountainside vineyard high above Napa Valley, set in a breathtaking landscape with steep exposures to the north, east, and southeast. The soils here are predominantly volcanic stone, naturally limiting vigor and yielding small, intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon berries. An unusually temperate growing season in 2018 allowed the vines to ripen slowly while preserving vivid aromatics, with flowering both healthy and productive. Harvest was carried out by hand over a focused three-day window in early October, parcel by parcel, at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the fruit is handled with meticulous care, typically undergoing small-lot fermentation and extended maceration to extract depth and fine tannin, followed by élevage in premium French oak barrels to refine texture, integrate oak nuances, and showcase the purity and power of this singular site.

Food & Serving
2018 Bond Pluribus is a natural partner for richly flavored, protein-driven dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure: think dry-aged ribeye, herb-crusted lamb, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or grilled Wagyu. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring wild mushrooms, black truffle, or roasted root vegetables, and with aged, hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano, or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is strongly recommended to reveal the wine’s full aromatic range and soften the tannins; as it matures in bottle, a shorter decant (or even a careful splash-decant) will be sufficient to awaken its more subtle tertiary notes.

Producer
Bond is one of Napa Valley’s most revered luxury producers, conceived as a “grand cru” collection devoted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon from a handful of extraordinary hillside sites. Founded by Bill Harlan—the visionary behind Harlan Estate—Bond emerged from decades of exploring more than eighty Napa vineyards, ultimately distilling that experience down to five singular crus: Melbury, Quella, St. Eden, Vecina, and Pluribus. Each wine is crafted as a pure expression of its site, with obsessive attention to detail from vineyard to bottle. Over the years, Bond has become a benchmark for modern Napa Cabernet, renowned for combining power, precision, and remarkable longevity, and for helping to define the very top echelon of Napa Valley terroir on the world stage.
