Description

The 2018 BOND Melbury is a benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from one of the estate’s most dramatic hillside sites overlooking Lake Hennessey. This is a meticulously crafted, ultra‑limited “Grand Cru”–level wine that captures the power and polish of Napa’s finest mountain terroir. With its combination of intensity, precision and rarity, it is a collector’s bottle designed to age gracefully for decades.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Melbury shows a deep, opaque garnet-purple hue that hints at both concentration and youth. The nose is immediately expressive, leaping from the glass with layers of fresh black cherries, mulberries and ripe plums, framed by notes of blackcurrant, cinnamon toast, Sichuan pepper and subtle oak spice. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon that walks a fine line between elegance and power. The core of crisp, pure dark fruit is lifted by vibrant acidity and supported by beautifully polished, fine-grained tannins. Mineral undertones—evoking warm stones and graphite—thread through the mid-palate and carry into a long, focused finish. Still very much at the beginning of its evolution, the 2018 Melbury has outstanding aging potential; stored correctly, it should continue to gain complexity and texture over 15–25+ years.

Production
Melbury Vineyard is perched on the hills of Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, with sweeping views over Lake Hennessey. This steep, rocky hillside site offers well-drained soils and excellent exposure, yielding low but highly concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon. BOND farms these small, mountainside parcels with meticulous, largely hands-on viticulture, favoring low yields and careful bunch selection at harvest. Grapes are picked by hand at optimal ripeness, then sorted with extreme precision before fermentation. Vinification typically involves small-lot fermentations and gentle extraction to preserve purity and finesse, followed by extended aging in high-quality French oak barrels, allowing the vineyard character to shine through while adding structure, depth and subtle spice.

Food & Serving
The 2018 BOND Melbury is best matched with refined, flavorful dishes that complement its structure and depth: think dry-aged ribeye, roast lamb with rosemary, venison with blackcurrant jus, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes. Aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Gouda also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Decanting is strongly recommended—give it 2–3 hours if drinking now to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfurl; in 10+ years, 60–90 minutes of decanting will typically suffice.

Producer
BOND was founded with a singular vision: to create a collection of Cabernet Sauvignon wines that each represents a “Grand Cru”–caliber site within Napa Valley. Over more than a quarter century, the estate has carefully worked with dozens of vineyards, ultimately selecting just five hillside sites—each farmed exclusively for BOND—to express the region’s finest terroirs. Owned by the same team behind the legendary Harlan Estate, BOND has become one of Napa Valley’s most revered producers, known for its tiny-production, highly sought-after wines that combine density, precision and longevity. With the majority of bottles remaining in the United States and strict provenance controls (including individual bottle identification and verification), BOND occupies a rarefied position at the very top of Napa’s fine wine hierarchy.
