Description

The 2018 Bodegas Magallanes Selección César Muñoz is a powerful yet refined Ribera del Duero red that showcases high-altitude Tempranillo at its best. Sourced from some of the region’s loftiest vineyards at around 1,000 meters above sea level, it marries intensity with freshness in a remarkably complete wine. Crafted by renowned winemaker César Muñoz, this cuvée offers the sophistication of top Ribera del Duero at a surprisingly accessible level.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Magallanes Selección César Muñoz shows a deep, opaque ruby core with violet highlights, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is inviting and layered, with warm scents of sweet baking spices, pipe tobacco, crushed violets, licorice and graphite, wrapped around a dark-fruited core of blackberry, black cherry and ripe plum. Subtle notes of cocoa, cedar and dried herbs emerge with air, adding complexity. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured Ribera with a velvety texture and finely knit tannins. Dense black fruit—blackberry, bramble and mulberry—interweaves with savory tones of spice, tobacco leaf, leather and a touch of smoke from its French oak élevage. The bright natural acidity from the high-altitude vineyards keeps the wine lifted, preventing any heaviness and giving it a long, persistent finish. Still youthful, it has ample structure and concentration to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage under proper cellaring, gaining complexity and softer tannins over time.

Production
The grapes for this wine come from one of Ribera del Duero’s highest and most demanding vineyard sites, sitting at around 1,000 meters above sea level. This altitude, combined with poor, well-drained soils and dramatic diurnal temperature swings, produces low-yielding Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) with thick skins, intense flavor and naturally high acidity. Harvest is carried out with great care to ensure optimal ripeness and fruit selection. Fermentation takes place in large 8,000-liter oak vats, using a gentle vinification approach designed specifically to avoid over-extraction and preserve finesse in both tannins and aromatics. After fermentation, the wine is aged for about 20 months in French oak barrels, allowing it to gain complexity, structure and subtle spice while maintaining a strong sense of fruit purity and terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a superb wine for hearty, flavorful dishes: think grilled or roasted lamb, Iberico pork chops, ribeye steak, game birds, or slow-braised beef and veal. It also pairs beautifully with aged Manchego, cured meats, and rich mushroom dishes, as well as stews with smoky paprika or rosemary. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Given its youth and concentration, decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended, especially in the next few years, to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full aromatic and textural complexity.

Producer
Magallanes is a highly regarded producer in Ribera del Duero, known for crafting characterful, terroir-driven wines that faithfully express the intensity and elegance of high-altitude Tempranillo. The estate’s flagship bottlings are guided by winemaker César Muñoz, whose extensive experience spans prestigious regions such as Madiran in France, a formative year at iconic Vega Sicilia, and time in Jerez before taking the lead of an oenological team in 1997. Since then, he has overseen vineyard and winery projects not only in Ribera del Duero but also in areas like Costers del Segre, Aragón and Chile. This broad expertise contributes to Magallanes’s reputation for precision, balance and longevity, placing the winery among the noteworthy names of modern Ribera del Duero.
