Production
Rosella’s Vineyard lies in a cool, maritime-influenced area not far from Monterey Bay, where morning fog, afternoon breezes and long growing seasons allow Pinot Noir to ripen slowly while retaining vibrant acidity. The vines, planted and farmed by renowned grower and winemaker Gary Franscioni, draw on well-drained soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor. Bernardus sources Pinot Noir exclusively from this single site for this cuvée, hand-harvesting the grapes at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional, small-lot vinification is used: careful sorting, gentle crushing, and temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve aromatics, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a portion new) to add subtle spice and texture without overshadowing the vineyard character. The result is a precise, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that clearly reflects its cool-climate origin.

This Pinot Noir’s combination of dark fruit, fresh acidity and elegant structure makes it highly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast duck, herb-crusted lamb, grilled salmon or tuna, mushroom risotto, and dishes featuring truffles or wild mushrooms. It also complements refined poultry dishes, such as guinea fowl or roast chicken with pan juices, as well as aged, semi-soft cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F). Decanting for 30–45 minutes can help the aromatics fully unfurl and the palate to soften, particularly in its youth, but it can also be enjoyed straight from the bottle if given a few minutes in the glass.

Bernardus Winery was founded in 1989 by Ben Pon, the former Dutch racing driver and member of the Pon family known for importing Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche to the Netherlands. Drawn to the hills behind Carmel Valley Village in California, Pon set out with an ambitious vision: to craft wines that could stand alongside top Bordeaux and Burgundy Grand Crus. Bernardus planted Bordeaux varieties—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc—in carefully selected Carmel Valley vineyards, while Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are sourced from cooler, maritime-influenced sites near Monterey Bay.
