Description

The 2018 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Private Reserve is one of Napa Valley’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon–based wines, crafted from an outstanding vintage that delivered both power and poise. This flagship bottling marries classic Rutherford structure with polished modern winemaking, resulting in a wine that is both immediately compelling and built to evolve for decades. First produced in 1936 and named after the winery’s founder, Georges de Latour, it remains a reference point for collectors seeking authentic, ageworthy Napa Cabernet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Georges de Latour Private Reserve shows a deep, opaque ruby-purple hue, suggesting both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive: blackcurrant and blackberry compote lead, supported by black cherry, cassis liqueur, and ripe plum, framed by notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and cocoa. Subtle accents of violets, baking spice, vanilla bean, and a hint of pencil shavings emerge with air, underscoring its pedigree. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, structured wine with a core of dense, dark fruit—cassis, blackberry, and black cherry—wrapped in fine but assertive tannins. There’s a lovely interplay of richness and freshness: vibrant acidity lifts the fruit, while layers of mocha, espresso, sweet oak spice, and a touch of dried herbs and Rutherford “dust” add complexity. The finish is long, persistent, and savory, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, spice, and mineral. The 2018 vintage has outstanding aging potential; while approachable now with sufficient aeration, this wine will continue to develop greater nuance over the next 10–20 years and likely beyond in optimal cellaring conditions.

Production
The 2018 Georges de Latour Private Reserve is sourced primarily from Beaulieu Vineyard’s historic Rutherford estate in the heart of Napa Valley, an area famed for its well-drained alluvial fans and gravelly, loam-rich soils that naturally limit yields and produce intensely flavored Cabernet Sauvignon. The region’s warm days and cool nights allow for slow, even ripening, preserving both fruit purity and structure. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and meticulously sorted to ensure only the finest clusters reach the fermenters. The wine is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a small percentage of Petit Verdot to enhance color, structure, and aromatic complexity. Vinification typically involves small-lot fermentation with careful temperature control and extended maceration to build depth and tannin refinement, followed by aging in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to integrate texture, add spice and toast notes, and polish the wine’s naturally powerful profile.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic red best matched with richly flavored dishes. Think dry-aged ribeye, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, braised short ribs, venison, or slow-cooked beef stews; the wine’s structure and intensity also make it a great companion to truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and aged firm cheeses such as Comté, mature cheddar, or Parmigiano-Reggiano. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). Decanting is strongly recommended—give it at least 1–2 hours if drinking now to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatics to fully unfurl. As it gains bottle age, a shorter decant will help to separate any sediment and gently open the wine.

Producer
Founded in 1900 by French immigrant Georges de Latour, Beaulieu Vineyard (BV) is one of Napa Valley’s most historic and influential wineries. Located in Rutherford, BV helped define the style and reputation of premium Napa Cabernet, especially through its Georges de Latour Private Reserve, which became an icon beginning with the 1936 vintage. Under the guidance of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff in the mid-20th century, BV pioneered many modern techniques and elevated the region’s global standing. Today, Beaulieu Vineyard remains a cornerstone of Napa Valley, known for its classic, ageworthy Cabernets that marry Old World-inspired structure with New World fruit richness, and the Georges de Latour Private Reserve continues to be one of the most collectible wines in the region.
