Description

The 2018 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo in magnum format is a benchmark expression of traditional Barolo from one of the region’s most revered estates. Crafted solely from estate-grown Nebbiolo and blended across several historic crus, it delivers remarkable finesse, energy, and depth even in its youth. The larger magnum bottle format enhances its aging curve, making this a superb choice for collectors and special occasions.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo shows a classic, transparent garnet core with brick-tinged rims, signaling both authenticity of style and age‑worthy structure. The nose is intensely perfumed yet restrained, with lifted aromas of rose petals, violet, sour cherry, blood orange, anise, and dried herbs, layered over hints of tar, tobacco, and subtle earthy minerality. On the palate, this Barolo is refined and linear rather than showy, with a medium to full body, precise acidity, and beautifully etched, chalky tannins. Flavors of red cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate, and orange zest intertwine with notes of fennel, dried flowers, leather, and savory spice. The finish is long, elegant, and mouthwatering, promising further complexity with time. While already approachable with proper aeration, the 2018 vintage—especially in magnum—has significant aging potential, evolving gracefully over 15–25 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
Bartolo Mascarello’s Barolo is a classic multi‑cru blend, drawing Nebbiolo from some of Barolo’s most storied sites, including Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue, and Rocche dell’Annunziata. These vineyards combine calcareous clay and marl with varied exposures, giving a balance of structure, perfume, and depth that defines the house style. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and cellar. In keeping with long-standing tradition, vinification involves extended maceration on the skins in concrete, followed by aging in large, neutral Slavonian oak botti for several years. There is no use of small new oak or high-tech manipulations—this is Barolo made in the most classic, old-school sense, allowing the terroir and vintage to speak clearly.

Food & Serving
This 2018 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo Magnum shines alongside refined, savory dishes: think truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, braised veal shank, roasted lamb, game birds, or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic complexity. Decanting is strongly recommended—60–90 minutes for current drinking—to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to unfold, especially given the magnum’s slower evolution. For long meals or special occasions, the wine will continue to open beautifully in the glass.

Producer
Bartolo Mascarello is one of the most iconic and staunchly traditional producers in Barolo, with a history dating back to the early 20th century. The estate, based in Barolo town, became a symbol of resistance to modernist trends when Bartolo himself famously defended the classic approach: blending vineyards, long macerations, and aging in large old casks. Today, the winery is run by his daughter, Maria Teresa Mascarello, who has preserved the house’s philosophy while elevating quality even further. Renowned for purity, elegance, and authenticity, Bartolo Mascarello’s Barolo is considered a reference point not only for the region, but for traditionally made Nebbiolo worldwide, and their wines are among the most sought-after in Piedmont.
