Description

The 2017 Tua Rita Giusto di Notri Magnum is a powerful, polished Tuscan Bordeaux-style blend presented in an impressive 1.5L format. Crafted to mark the 25th anniversary of Giusto di Notri, this special edition captures the estate’s evolution from a modest family project into one of coastal Tuscany’s most admired producers. Focused, sculpted and deeply expressive, it brings together richness, structure and refinement in a way that has made Tua Rita a modern icon. With Cabernet Sauvignon playing the lead role, supported by Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc, this wine combines dark, ripe fruit with remarkable tension and minerality. First released in the mid-1990s, Giusto di Notri quickly gained cult status and helped put Suvereto and the wider Maremma area on the fine-wine map, proving that some of Italy’s most compelling reds could emerge from this coastal corner of Tuscany.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Giusto di Notri shows a deep, almost opaque ruby-purple hue, with a dense, glossy rim that hints at both concentration and youth. Swirling reveals slow, fine legs that reinforce the sense of richness and extract in this magnum bottling. The nose is intense and beautifully layered: blackberry compote, blackcurrant and ripe plum meet notes of graphite, cedar and tobacco from the Cabernet Sauvignon. A slightly reduced share of Merlot adds polished dark cherry and a suggestion of mocha sweetness, while Cabernet Franc lifts the bouquet with hints of wild herbs, pencil shavings, crushed violets and a cool, ferrous minerality. Subtle accents of toasted oak, cocoa nib and baking spice reflect the slightly heavier toast on the barriques used in this vintage. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly focused, with a firm, linear core that keeps the opulence in check. The attack is silky and generous, delivering layers of black fruit—cassis, black cherry and blackberry—wrapped in fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity. The mid-palate shows notes of licorice, dark chocolate, roasted coffee bean and sweet spice, evolving into a long, persistent finish marked by a distinctive chalky, almost limestone-like minerality. Despite its power, there is an underlying elegance and discipline that promises superb aging potential. In magnum, this 2017 has a particularly long life ahead. While already approachable with extended aeration, it will continue to develop complexity and tertiary notes—leather, cigar box, dried flowers and truffle—over the next 10–20 years, and likely beyond under proper cellar conditions.

Production
Giusto di Notri is sourced from Tua Rita’s estate vineyards around Suvereto in coastal Tuscany, an area characterized by warm Mediterranean breezes, abundant sunshine and cooling winds from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The soils are a mix of clay, pebbles and mineral-rich elements, including limestone and iron, contributing both power and that distinctive chalky, mineral edge found in the wine. Vines are carefully tended with low yields in mind, and harvesting is done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are brought to the cellar. In the winery, the grapes are sorted meticulously before fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks, allowing for precise extraction of color, aroma and tannin. Each variety—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with a reduced proportion of Merlot and a smaller share of Cabernet Franc—is vinified separately to preserve its character, then blended after careful tasting and selection. The 2017 vintage spent a slightly shorter time in French oak barriques (around 16 months) compared to some previous years, but with barrels of a slightly higher toast level, emphasizing depth, spice and structure while maintaining the core of dark, pure fruit. The final blend is bottled and given additional rest to harmonize before release, with this limited edition offered in a special 1.5L magnum format.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Giusto di Notri Magnum is a superb centerpiece for rich, flavorful dishes and celebratory meals. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats—such as bistecca alla fiorentina, lamb racks with rosemary, or slow-braised beef short ribs—as well as game like venison or wild boar ragu. Aged hard cheeses (Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano), truffle-infused dishes and porcini-based pastas also highlight the wine’s depth and earthy-mineral nuances. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F). In magnum, the wine benefits greatly from aeration; decant at least 2–3 hours before serving in its youth, and 1–2 hours if opened after several years of bottle age. Use large, Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the bouquet to fully unfold and the structure to soften around the lush, dark fruit.

Producer
Tua Rita was founded in 1984 when Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio purchased a small property in Suvereto with just two hectares of vines, never imagining it would become one of Tuscany’s most revered estates. Through meticulous vineyard work and a relentless focus on quality, their wines rapidly achieved cult status, helping to define the reputation of Suvereto and coastal Tuscany as a source of world-class, Bordeaux-inspired reds. Over the years, the domaine expanded to around 30 hectares, and following Virgilio’s passing in 2010, their daughter Simena and her husband Stefano Frascolla took over day-to-day management, upholding the same uncompromising standards. Today, Tua Rita is celebrated internationally for its powerful yet refined wines, including the legendary Redigaffi and Giusto di Notri, often earning top scores from leading critics and collectors. The estate is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of the region’s “Super Tuscan” movement, and its continued success underscores its role as a benchmark producer in Maremma and greater Tuscany.
