Description
The 2017 Tim Mondavi Continuum Proprietary Red is a commanding Napa Valley blend that captures the drama and nuance of the estate’s lofty Pritchard Hill vineyards. Crafted from 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot, and 9% Merlot, it is both powerful and poised, with a structure built for decades of evolution. This wine stands out as one of Napa’s modern benchmarks, uniting old-world sensibility with new-world intensity from one of California’s most storied wine families.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Continuum shows a deeply saturated garnet-purple color, hinting immediately at its concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, unfolding with violet and lavender, wild rosehip, ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and redcurrant, supported by darker notes of cocoa, cigar box, laurel leaf, and a distinct mineral impression reminiscent of crushed wet slate.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied and vividly energetic wine, where black and red fruits interweave: blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry are lifted by red plum and cherry, a dusting of spice, and pronounced mineral accents. The tannins are firm, grainy and impeccably ripe, giving the wine a sculpted framework without sacrificing finesse. A long, aromatic finish carries notes of dark chocolate, dried herbs and graphite, all wrapped in fresh, vibrant acidity. Still very much at the beginning of its life, the 2017 Continuum has the depth and structure to age gracefully for 30 years or more, with tertiary notes of tobacco, cedar, truffle and leather likely to emerge over time.
Production
Continuum is grown on the rugged slopes of Napa Valley’s Pritchard Hill, where high elevation, rocky volcanic soils and dramatic diurnal temperature swings produce intensely flavored, structured fruit. The site’s mix of red, iron-rich and volcanic tuff soils, combined with excellent drainage, naturally restricts yields and concentrates character in the berries. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small lots, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine clusters make it into the final blend. Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, often beginning with cold soaks to gently extract color and aroma, followed by fermentation in a mix of small tanks and/or oak, with careful cap management to refine tannin texture. After blending, the wine is aged in high-quality French oak (a significant portion new), allowing it to integrate its components, build complexity and gain polish before release.
Food & Serving
This is a serious, cellar-worthy red best suited to equally refined dishes: think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, slow-braised short ribs, roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, and well-aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for optimal expression. If opened in its youth, decant generously for at least 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and texture to unfurl; older bottles will benefit from a more delicate, shorter decant to remove sediment while preserving mature nuances.
Producer
Continuum Estate is the culmination of Tim Mondavi’s lifelong pursuit of fine wine, rooted in the legacy of the Mondavi family, who helped define Napa Valley as a world-class region. After the sale of the Robert Mondavi Winery, Tim and his family founded Continuum to focus on a single, grand cru–style estate wine from the heights of Pritchard Hill. From its inception, Continuum has been dedicated to meticulous viticulture and restrained, terroir-driven winemaking, emphasizing elegance, balance and ageworthiness. The estate has quickly become one of Napa’s most respected producers, consistently earning critical acclaim and high scores from leading wine critics, and is now regarded as a reference point for sophisticated, Bordeaux-inspired blends from the region.
