2017 Shafer Vineyards Napa Valley Relentless is a bold, dark, and deeply structured red that captures the rugged character of the Vaca Mountains and the polish of modern Napa Valley winemaking. Crafted predominantly from Syrah with a touch of Petite Sirah, it’s a powerful yet finely tuned wine that lives up to its name in intensity and length. First released in the late 1990s as an homage to Shafer’s longtime winemaker Elias Fernandez, Relentless has since become one of Napa’s benchmark Syrah-based blends, consistently celebrated for its depth and age-worthiness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Relentless is intensely colored—near opaque purple with a deep ruby rim, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive, combining ripe black fruits with savory and smoky nuances: think blackberry compote, black plum, and blueberry alongside notes of cracked black pepper, charcoal, cured meat, violets, and a touch of dark chocolate and espresso from the oak. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, richly textured wine with a core of dense black fruit wrapped in firm yet refined tannins. Flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and boysenberry are interwoven with licorice, graphite, grilled herbs, and a subtle gamey edge that is classic Syrah. The Petite Sirah brings added structure and a darker, brooding character. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of spice and cocoa. While already impressive with some air, the 2017 Relentless has significant aging potential; stored properly, it should continue to evolve and gain complexity over 12–20 years, with the tannins becoming more velvety and the savory notes more pronounced.

Production
Relentless is sourced from Shafer’s estate vineyards in the rocky foothills of the Vaca Mountains in Napa Valley, notably in the Stags Leap District area, where thin, well-drained soils and ample afternoon sun create ideal conditions for ripening Syrah while preserving structure and freshness. The fruit is hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and fermented in small lots to allow for precise control over extraction. After fermentation and extended skin contact to build color, aroma, and tannin integration, the wine is aged for an extended period—around 30 months—in 100% new French oak barrels. This long élevage adds polish, spice, and textural richness while allowing the components of Syrah and Petite Sirah to harmonize into a seamless, powerful blend.

The 2017 Relentless is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or braised red meats—think ribeye steak, lamb shanks, short ribs, or venison—as well as slow-cooked stews, barbecue with a smoky rub, and game birds with earthy sides like mushrooms or root vegetables. It also complements robust, aged cheeses such as aged Gouda, Comté, or mature Cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is strongly recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open up, soften the tannins, and reveal its full aromatic complexity.
