Description
2017 Promontory is one of Napa Valley’s most sought-after red wines, crafted by the Harlan family from a dramatic, secluded hillside just beyond Oakville’s western ridge. Born from an extreme landscape and meticulous, small-lot vinification, this vintage captures both the wild energy of the site and the refinement expected of a modern Napa icon. For collectors and serious enthusiasts, it stands as a benchmark expression of mountain-grown Cabernet-based wine in Napa.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Promontory shows a deep, opaque garnet core with youthful ruby reflections at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive and layered: exuberant red berries, black cherry compote and warm cassis are intertwined with notes of cinnamon, dried rose petals, unsmoked cigar tobacco and fragrant earth. As it opens, more subtle nuances emerge—graphite, crushed stones and a gentle, savory spice.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, powerful Napa red with remarkable poise. Dense layers of red and black fruits unfold gradually—blackcurrant, black cherry, wild raspberry—supported by a strong mineral spine that clearly reflects its rugged hillside origin. The tannins are firm, finely grained and architecturally precise, giving the wine a rock-solid structure that frames the flamboyant fruit rather than dominating it. The finish is very long, with a vibrant lift and lingering notes of dark fruit, cedar and stone. Still youthful, it has significant aging potential; cellaring for 10–20+ years will allow the tannins to further polish and the mineral, floral and tobacco notes to gain even more complexity.
Production
Promontory’s vineyards occupy a remote, geologically complex amphitheater in the southwestern hills above Oakville, at the intersection of multiple soil formations ranging from fractured rock to ancient sedimentary layers. This wild, steep terrain produces low natural yields and intensely flavored grapes, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, from carefully delineated parcels. The estate practices meticulous, parcel-by-parcel harvesting—sometimes with dozens of separate passes—to pick each block at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the lots are vinified separately in small tanks, allowing the team to capture the character of each micro-terroir before blending. Long, gentle macerations and élevage in carefully selected barrels and large-format vessels help refine the powerful tannic structure while preserving the wine’s innate energy, purity and mineral expression.
Food & Serving
2017 Promontory is best showcased alongside refined, richly flavored dishes: dry-aged ribeye or tomahawk steak, slow-braised short ribs, roast lamb with rosemary and thyme, or game such as venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragù, or aged hard cheeses like Comté, aged Gouda or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is highly recommended to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the structure to soften; as it matures, 60–90 minutes in a decanter will generally suffice.
Producer
Promontory is a singular project from the Harlan family, renowned pioneers of Napa Valley fine wine since the late 1970s. After establishing Harlan Estate as one of the region’s true international benchmarks, H. William Harlan discovered the isolated Promontory site while hiking along Oakville’s southwestern ridgeline in the early 1980s. Captivated by its raw, untamed beauty and dramatic topography, the family eventually acquired the land in 2008 and began an intensive exploration of its complex geology and microclimates. Today, Promontory is overseen by the second generation, and is regarded as one of Napa’s most distinctive and terroir-driven estates, producing wines that marry the power of mountain fruit with a profound sense of place and long-term ageworthiness.
