Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Galatrona shows a deep, opaque ruby core with violet reflections, hinting at its richness and youth in magnum format. The nose opens with intense notes of ripe black plum, blackberry compote, and dark cherry, layered with nuances of violet, graphite, sweet tobacco, cocoa, and fine spice from French oak. On the palate, it is plush yet structured, with velvety tannins wrapped around a core of dark fruit, blackcurrant, and plum, underscored by espresso, dark chocolate, licorice, and a subtle balsamic lift. Despite the warmth of the vintage, the wine retains a fresh line of acidity and a savory mineral edge that keeps it balanced and precise. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of spice and dark berries. In magnum, this 2017 has excellent aging potential: it is already expressive but will continue to evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining further complexity and finesse.

Production
Galatrona is a single-vineyard Merlot grown on Petrolo’s hillside estate in the Val d’Arno di Sopra area of Tuscany, at elevations that provide significant diurnal temperature shifts. The soils are a mix of clay, galestro, and sandstone, offering excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s natural concentration and mineral backbone. Vines are farmed with great attention to low yields and environmental respect, with hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters make it to the cellar. After rigorous selection, the grapes are gently vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with careful extraction to preserve finesse as well as power. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant portion new), where it matures on its lees to build texture, aromatic complexity, and structure before bottling.

This 2017 Galatrona Magnum is a natural match for richly flavored dishes such as Florentine-style steak (bistecca alla fiorentina), slow-braised beef or lamb, game dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. It also works beautifully with roasted root vegetables and mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy undertones. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Given its youth and concentration, especially in magnum, decanting for 1.5–3 hours is recommended to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open.
