Description

The 2017 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru is a rare snapshot of white Burgundy at its most complete and luxurious. Drawn from one of the most hallowed parcels of Chardonnay on earth, this Grand Cru marries power, depth and precision in a way only Montrachet can. In a vintage that delivered both ripeness and tension, Louis Latour has crafted a wine of exceptional clarity, intensity and aging potential. Montrachet is often cited as the benchmark for great dry white wine worldwide, and with less than 8 hectares in total, it is understandably elusive. Eighteen owners share this fabled slope spanning both Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, and Louis Latour’s holdings are among the most respected. Long praised since the 1950s and 1960s for its monumental whites, the domaine’s Montrachet Grand Cru continues that legacy with a wine that has already earned top critical acclaim in 2017.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru shows a clear, luminous pale gold color with delicate green highlights, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is immediately intense and layered, with soaring aromas of blanched almonds, marzipan, vanilla pod and acacia blossom, wrapped in notes of honeysuckle and a touch of warm pastry. Subtle hints of citrus oil, white peach and chalky minerality emerge with air, adding complexity and lift. On the palate, this is ample and richly textured yet beautifully controlled, with a dense, silky core that never feels heavy. Flavors of ripe stone fruit, marzipan and lemon cream are interwoven with vanilla, fresh almond and a fine, saline-driven minerality. The wine is both fresh and tightly knit, its generous mid-palate carried by a precise, lingering acidity. The finish is extraordinarily long, echoing with almond, vanilla and floral nuances long after each sip. While already impressive in its youth, this Montrachet has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 10–20 years or more, gaining in complexity, truffle notes and hazelnut richness with time in bottle.

Production
This Grand Cru originates from the legendary Montrachet vineyard, straddling the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet on a south- to southeast-facing slope of ideal exposure. Here, old-vine Chardonnay (the cépage of all great white Montrachet) grows in thin, stony limestone and marl soils that naturally limit yields and concentrate flavor, while the elevated position and constant airflow help retain freshness. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection both in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit makes it into the final cuvée. Fermentation traditionally takes place in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak to support the wine’s breadth and aging capacity, followed by extended maturation on fine lees. This classic Burgundian élevage builds Montrachet’s hallmark texture, polish and complexity while preserving the mineral backbone that defines the terroir.

Food & Serving
The 2017 Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru deserves the finest cuisine, shining brightest alongside luxurious, delicately prepared dishes. Think butter-poached lobster, scallops in a light cream or beurre blanc, roasted turbot or sole, Bresse chicken with morels, or refined veal dishes with a subtle, creamy sauce. It also pairs beautifully with aged Comté, Beaufort or a well-matured Gruyère. Serve slightly cool, ideally around 12–14°C (54–57°F), to allow the aromatics and texture to fully open without muting its complexity. Young bottles will benefit from gentle decanting 30–45 minutes before serving to release the wine’s layered bouquet; mature bottles should be handled more delicately and given just enough air in the glass to reveal their nuance.

Producer
Maison Louis Latour is one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected négociant-éleveurs, with roots dating back to the late 18th century and a family legacy in winegrowing for over two centuries. Based in Beaune, the house has built its reputation on an exceptional portfolio of Burgundy’s top crus, particularly in the Côte d’Or, including benchmark bottlings from Corton-Charlemagne, Corton and Montrachet. As both grower and producer, Louis Latour combines deep experience in the region’s terroirs with a classical, time-honored approach to vinification and élevage. Their Grand Cru whites have long been considered reference points for ageworthy Burgundy and continue to garner high scores and praise from leading international critics, reinforcing the domaine’s standing as a key guardian of Burgundy’s finest vineyards.
