Description
The 2017 Leroy Vosne-Romanée is a rare chance to experience one of Burgundy’s most coveted village wines from a truly legendary domaine. Drawn from meticulously farmed, biodynamic parcels in Vosne-Romanée and released late from Leroy’s own cellars in 2022, it offers a level of depth and finesse far beyond what is typically expected at the communal level. This cuvée captures the sensual, spice‑laden signature of Vosne-Romanée while showcasing the precision, purity and haunting complexity that have made Domaine Leroy a global benchmark.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Leroy Vosne-Romanée shows a luminous, translucent ruby with garnet highlights that testify to its careful aging in the domaine’s own cellars. The nose is intensely expressive yet refined, unveiling layers of rose petals, wild strawberry, black cherry and redcurrant, interwoven with exotic Vosne spice—star anise, clove, sandalwood—alongside hints of violet, forest floor, fine tobacco and a delicate, sweet oak nuance.
On the palate, the wine is silken and impeccably poised, with an almost weightless concentration. Pure red and dark berry fruit glides across the tongue, supported by ultra-fine, chalk‑tinted tannins and a vibrant, saline minerality that stretches the finish. Subtle notes of black tea, truffle, dried flowers and sweet spice emerge with air, adding extraordinary complexity. While already remarkably harmonious and accessible for a 2017, this wine has the structure and inner energy to evolve beautifully for 10–15+ years under proper cellaring, gaining even greater nuance and tertiary detail.
Production
Domaine Leroy’s Vosne-Romanée is sourced from some of the appellation’s most privileged village-level sites, rooted in classic Burgundian limestone and clay soils that naturally restrict yields and imbue the wine with its signature minerality and perfume. The vineyards are cultivated according to strict biodynamic principles—no synthetic chemicals, painstaking canopy work, meticulous green harvesting and extremely low yields—to ensure maximum vine health and concentration. Harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with ruthless sorting in the vineyard and again at the winery so that only pristine, perfectly ripe Pinot Noir grapes make it into the fermenters. Vinification is traditional yet highly attentive: whole clusters or a high proportion of whole bunches are often used, fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts, and extraction is gentle to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in high‑quality French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), resting undisturbed for years in Leroy’s cold, deep cellars before the domaine chooses to release it—this particular 2017 being a rare late release that benefited from extended élevage and bottle aging on site.
Food & Serving
This 2017 Vosne-Romanée from Leroy is at its best with refined, subtly flavored dishes that mirror its elegance: roast pigeon or duck with cherries, veal sweetbreads, milk‑fed lamb, or guinea fowl with morels and a light jus. It also pairs beautifully with dishes featuring truffle, wild mushrooms, or root vegetables, as well as aged but not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté, Tomme or mild washed‑rind cheeses. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) in large Burgundy stems to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended in youth to open up the nose and soften the structure; for older bottles or if already very expressive, a gentle splash‑decant or even serving straight from the bottle with some time in the glass can be ideal.
Producer
Domaine Leroy is one of the most revered names in Burgundy, often mentioned in the same breath as Domaine de la Romanée‑Conti and Domaine Armand Rousseau. Its origins lie in Maison Leroy, the négociant house founded by François Leroy in the late 19th century. In 1988, Lalou Bize‑Leroy—an iconic and uncompromising figure in Burgundy—founded Domaine Leroy, building on her family’s deep roots in the region and her long tenure as co‑manager and co‑owner of DRC. She swiftly converted the domaine’s holdings to rigorous biodynamic farming, long before it became fashionable, and adopted an approach of extremely low yields, obsessive vineyard work and minimally interventionist winemaking. With tiny production and near‑mythical quality, Domaine Leroy’s wines—ranging from village Vosne-Romanée to grand crus like Romanée‑Saint‑Vivant and Chambertin—are among the rarest and most sought‑after Burgundies in the world, prized for their complexity, finesse and extraordinary aging potential.
