Description
The 2017 Eisele Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a polished, deeply expressive Napa Valley red from one of the region’s most revered single vineyards. Sourced exclusively from the historic Eisele Vineyard east of Calistoga, this wine marries power with finesse, showcasing remarkable purity of fruit and precision. First planted in the 1880s and farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, Eisele has become a benchmark site for Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley, known for wines that age gracefully and develop striking complexity over decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Eisele Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon shows a deep, dark garnet hue, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its concentration and intensity. The nose is distinctive and refined, opening with expressive floral notes of violets and fresh blue fruits that are characteristic of the Eisele terroir. Subtle accents of roasted meat jus, tobacco leaf and graphite mingle with ripe cherry and cassis, adding savory depth and complexity as the wine unfurls in the glass.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied yet poised Cabernet, offering a fresh, precise mouthfeel framed by fine-grained, tightly knit tannins. Layers of dark berries, black cherry and blue fruit are laced with hints of spice, Darjeeling tea, cocoa powder and a touch of toasted coconut-like texture. The structure is firm but elegant, with vibrant acidity keeping the wine lifted and energetic. The finish is long and persistent, echoing dark fruit, florals and subtle savory notes. While already impressive, the 2017 has significant aging potential and will continue to gain in complexity and harmony over 10–20 years, and likely beyond in optimal cellaring conditions.
Production
Eisele Vineyard lies in the northeastern corner of Napa Valley, just east of Calistoga at the foot of the Palisades Mountains, on alluvial fans composed of gravel, cobbles and well-drained soils that naturally limit vigor and enhance concentration. The site benefits from warm days, cooling breezes and evening downslope currents, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen fully while retaining freshness. Farmed organically since 1998 and biodynamically since 2000, the vineyard is cultivated with a focus on soil health and biodiversity, and fruit is typically harvested by hand in small lots, block by block, at optimal physiological ripeness. In the cellar, individual parcels are vinified separately, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to integrate tannins, build structure and highlight the inherent character of the vineyard rather than overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This 2017 Eisele Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb chops, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or beef stew with root vegetables. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, such as Comté, mature Gouda or well-aged cheddar, and with earthy dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps open the bouquet and soften the structure; as the wine matures, a shorter decant primarily for sediment management will suffice.
Producer
Eisele Vineyard is one of Napa Valley’s most storied estates, with vines first planted on the site in the 1880s to varieties such as Zinfandel and Riesling. Cabernet Sauvignon arrived in 1964, and over the decades the vineyard has become synonymous with site-driven, ageworthy Napa Cabernet, frequently earning critical acclaim and a dedicated following among collectors. Pioneering organic viticulture at the property in 1998 and full biodynamic farming from 2000, the estate has played a key role in demonstrating how meticulous, low-intervention farming can yield wines of both power and transparency. Today, Eisele Vineyard stands as a reference point for single-vineyard Cabernet in the region, producing wines that consistently rank among Napa Valley’s most highly regarded and sought-after bottles.
