Description
The 2017 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is the historic flagship wine of this iconic Morey-Saint-Denis estate, drawn from some of the choicest old vines in Burgundy. Sourced two-thirds from the original Clos de la Roche climat and one-third from the foot of the slope in Clos des Monts-Luisants, it marries depth and power with remarkable finesse. With its old-vine concentration, perfect natural balance and silken tannins, this is a benchmark Grand Cru Burgundy built for both contemplation and long aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting its Grand Cru intensity and youthful vigor. The nose is immediately complex and refined: wild red and black berries, crushed cherries and blackcurrant mingle with notes of violets, rose petals, forest floor, and a delicate hint of game, underpinned by subtle tones of mineral, spice and dried herbs.
On the palate, this wine is simultaneously powerful and supremely elegant. Layers of ripe red cherry, blackberry and black raspberry unfold over a finely etched mineral backbone, with nuances of licorice, black tea, truffle and dried flowers emerging with air. The tannins are extremely silky, yet firmly structured, giving the wine a sense of precision and tension. Acidity is vibrant but perfectly integrated, leading to a long, resonant finish that lingers with notes of spice and stone. While already captivating in its youth, this 2017 has excellent aging potential; properly cellared, it should evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining even more aromatic complexity and textural refinement.
Production
Clos de la Roche is one of the great Grand Cru terroirs of the Côte de Nuits, here represented by 3.2 hectares of old vines averaging an impressive 65 years of age. The soils are lean, clay-limestone with a base of fine Premeaux and Comblanchien limestone, giving the wine its characteristic tension, minerality and structural backbone. Domaine Ponsot farms these old vines with meticulous care, harvesting the grapes by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both purity of fruit and delicate aromatic nuance. After careful sorting, the fruit is destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled wooden vats using only indigenous yeasts, a hallmark of Ponsot’s low-intervention philosophy. The wine then matures for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels that are around 20 years old—never new—allowing the terroir and old-vine concentration to shine without overt wood influence. Production is limited, with only about 10,000 bottles crafted each year.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Burgundy deserves thoughtful pairings and careful service. It is superb with refined dishes such as roast lamb, côte de veau, pigeon or duck breast, as well as game birds, veal sweetbreads, or slow-braised beef cheeks. Earthy accompaniments—wild mushrooms, truffles, root vegetables and lentils—accentuate its savory complexity, while aged hard cheeses like Comté or Beaufort can make for a memorable match. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) in large Burgundy stems to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl. Young bottles benefit from a gentle decant of 45–60 minutes, while more mature bottles should be handled delicately, with minimal or no decanting to preserve their evolved bouquet.
