Description

Bottled in an impressive magnum format, the 2017 Domaine Michel Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots captures the sensual, perfumed elegance that has made this premier cru one of the most coveted in Burgundy. Sourced from a historic family estate and a top vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, this Pinot Noir offers both immediate charm and serious aging potential. The larger bottle format further enhances its ability to evolve gracefully, making it ideal for the cellar or a special table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2017 Les Suchots shows a deep, luminous ruby hue with garnet reflections beginning to form at the rim—an indicator of its early evolution while retaining vivid freshness. The nose is intensely aromatic yet refined, with layers of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry coulis, interwoven with rose petals, violet, and a delicate spice bouquet of clove, star anise, and sandalwood. Subtle notes of fine vanilla, cocoa nib, and a hint of forest floor and truffle echo the wine’s Burgundian pedigree and time in quality French oak. On the palate, the wine is silky and precise, with a fine-boned structure typical of Vosne-Romanée and the sensual depth that Les Suchots is known for. Juicy red and black berry fruit are supported by vibrant acidity and ultra-fine, chalky tannins that glide rather than grip. Savory undertones of black tea, graphite, and a touch of smoke add complexity and length. The 2017 vintage brings an accessible, charming character in youth, yet the magnum format and balanced structure suggest a graceful evolution over 12–18 years from vintage, with the potential to drink beautifully through at least the early 2030s.

Production
Les Suchots is a revered premier cru nestled between some of Vosne-Romanée’s most prestigious vineyards, lying at 290–345 meters of altitude with an eastern exposure that captures the morning sun. The soils here are deep, fine, and very stony, fostering excellent drainage and a natural concentration of fruit, while retaining enough depth to preserve freshness and aromatic nuance. At Domaine Michel Noëllat, the grapes are harvested and rigorously sorted by hand, then transported gently in small containers to the cuverie to avoid crushing and premature oxidation. After 100% destemming, the fruit undergoes a cold pre-fermentation maceration of 3–5 days to enhance color and aromatic expression, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks over 18–20 days, with regular pump-overs and cap punching to extract fine tannins and complex flavors. Elevage takes place over 14 months in French oak barrels, around 50% new, bringing subtle sweetness, spice, and structure without overwhelming the purity of Pinot Noir or the signature of the Suchots terroir.

Food & Serving
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots shines with refined yet flavorful cuisine—think roast duck with cherries, pigeon or quail, veal tenderloin with morels, or a classic boeuf bourguignon prepared with care. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses such as Comté, Brillat-Savarin, or a mature Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl without losing the wine’s tension. Given the magnum format and the wine’s structure, decanting for 45–90 minutes is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; with further bottle age, a gentle 30-minute decant to remove any sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
Domaine Michel Noëllat is a long-established, family-run estate in Vosne-Romanée, with roots dating back to Félix Noëllat in the 19th century and now spanning five generations. Over roughly twenty hectares of vines, the domaine has steadily modernized while remaining deeply anchored in Burgundian tradition—Michel Noëllat’s stone-vaulted cellar, dug in 1980, and the state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled winery added in 2007 reflect this balance of heritage and innovation. Since 2012, Sébastien Noëllat has overseen viticulture and winemaking, working closely with his niece Sophie, who manages the commercial side, to ensure each vintage expresses the estate’s meticulous approach and respect for terroir. With holdings in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most revered appellations, Domaine Michel Noëllat is recognized as an important and rising reference in Vosne-Romanée, producing wines that marry clarity of fruit, precision, and classic Burgundian elegance.
