Description

Bottled in generous magnum format, the 2017 Domaine Michel Noëllat Echezeaux Grand Cru is a polished expression of top-flight Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir, combining depth, finesse, and classic Burgundian charm. This revered Grand Cru, from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most storied terroirs, offers a wine built both for contemplation today and for graceful evolution over time. The 2017 vintage, welcomed for its return to healthy volumes and refined, elegant reds, brings a particularly harmonious balance of fruit, freshness, and structure to this wine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Echezeaux Grand Cru shows a deep, luminous ruby core with subtle garnet reflections—young yet already hinting at complexity. The nose is refined and layered, opening with ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries, and raspberries, followed by notes of violets, rose petal, and sweet spice. With air, more nuanced aromas emerge: fine cedar and sandalwood from its élevage in French oak, along with hints of forest floor, truffle, and a discreet mineral undertone. On the palate, the wine is silky yet structured, with a precise, medium+ body and vibrant acidity that carries the fruit in a long, persistent arc. The attack brings pure red berry fruit—Morello cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry coulis—then deepens into darker tones of plum and black cherry, supported by very fine-grained tannins. Subtle notes of clove, star anise, cocoa, and toasted oak integrate seamlessly without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long and elegant, marked by a saline, stony lift and lingering spice. In magnum, this 2017 has excellent aging potential: it is already approachable with decanting, but should gain further complexity and tertiary nuance over the next 10–20 years, evolving toward sous-bois, game, and truffle while retaining its core of fruit and freshness.

Production
Echezeaux is one of Vosne-Romanée’s great Grands Crus, with east-facing slopes between roughly 260 and 300 meters in altitude, ensuring excellent exposure to the morning sun and slow, even ripening. The soils here are deep, composed of gravel and silt over limestone, giving both good drainage and the mineral backbone so prized in Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. At Domaine Michel Noëllat, the grapes for this cuvée are harvested entirely by hand, then carefully sorted to retain only perfectly healthy, optimally ripe bunches. The fruit is 100% destemmed, preserving purity and precision of aromatics, and transferred gently in small containers to avoid crushing the berries. A cold pre-fermentation maceration of 3–5 days precedes alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks lasting 18–20 days, with regular pump-overs and 4–5 punch-downs to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins. The wine is then aged for around 14 months in French oak barrels, 50% of which are new, balancing structure and aromatic complexity while respecting the character of the terroir and the vintage.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes that can match its depth without overwhelming its elegance. Think roast duck with cherry or plum glaze, venison or other game birds, beef Wellington, veal with morels, or slow-braised lamb shank. It also shines with earthy dishes such as wild mushroom fricassée, truffle risotto, and aged soft cheeses like Epoisses, Brillat-Savarin, or a well-matured Brie de Meaux. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. Given its youth and concentration—especially in magnum—decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften.

Producer
Domaine Michel Noëllat is a historic, family-run estate in Vosne-Romanée, with roots going back to the 19th century and founder Félix Noëllat. Over five generations, the family has expanded and refined the domaine, which now covers around 20 hectares across some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted appellations. Known for its entrepreneurial spirit, the estate has invested in both tradition and technology: Michel Noëllat created a classic stone-vaulted cellar in 1980, and in 2007 a state-of-the-art cuverie with 40 temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and a dedicated tasting cellar was added. Since 2012, Sébastien Noëllat has overseen viticulture and winemaking, while his niece Sophie manages the commercial side, together ensuring each vintage remains faithful to the domaine’s philosophy—precision in the vineyard and cellar, meticulous hand harvesting and sorting, and a style that marries the elegance of Vosne-Romanée with the depth expected of its Premier and Grand Cru terroirs. Their wines are increasingly recognized among Burgundy enthusiasts for their purity, finesse, and excellent aging capacity.
