Description

2017 Domaine d'Eugénie Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru is a powerful yet seductive expression of one of Burgundy’s most revered terroirs. This is a Pinot Noir that marries intensity and finesse, showing how far Domaine d’Eugénie has come under the guidance of winemaker Michel Mallard. Once criticized for being too oaky and subdued, the domaine now produces wines that leading critics hail as among the most concentrated and characterful Grands-Echezeaux in recent years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with a youthful sheen at the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose is hauntingly aromatic: layers of black cherry, wild raspberry and ripe strawberry interweave with rose petals, violets, orange zest and subtle whole-cluster spice. As it opens, more complex notes emerge—sweet tobacco, sandalwood, sous-bois, black tea and a fine, graphite-like minerality. On the palate, this wine is both dense and silken. Dark red and black fruits are wrapped in a refined, chalky tannin structure that feels firm yet incredibly polished. Flavors of cherry liqueur, redcurrant, plum and wild berries are lifted by savory notes of clove, star anise, dried herbs and a touch of cocoa from the 70% new oak, which is beautifully integrated rather than dominant. The finish is long, precise and saline, with a lingering echo of spice and crushed stone. While already expressive in its youth thanks to the 2017 vintage’s charm, this Grand Cru has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years, developing more tertiary notes of truffle, forest floor and game with time.

Production
Domaine d’Eugénie’s Grands-Echezeaux parcel sits in a prime position: the first rows of vines you encounter as you drive from Vosne-Romanée into this legendary grand cru. The domaine farms a modest 0.50 hectares here, with a vine age averaging around 25 years and select rows reaching up to 60 years—old vines that naturally limit yields and intensify flavor. The soils are a classic Burgundian mix of clay and limestone, providing both structure and tension in the finished wine. In 2017, approximately 60% whole clusters were used during fermentation, bringing lifted aromatics, additional complexity and fine-grained tannins. After a careful harvest by hand, the grapes were sorted rigorously, vinified with a focus on gentle extraction, and then matured in French oak barrels, 70% of which were new. This élevage regimen frames the wine with subtle oak nuances without compromising the purity and precision of the Grands-Echezeaux terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir deserves equally refined cuisine. It is superb with classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin, pigeon or duck breast with cherry or berry reduction, and veal sweetbreads. It also pairs beautifully with roast lamb, venison or other game birds, especially when accompanied by earthy elements like mushrooms, truffles or root vegetables. Mature hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gruyère) and refined soft cheeses like Brillat-Savarin or Époisses also work wonderfully. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity. For current drinking, decant gently for 1–2 hours to open up the bouquet and soften the structure; older bottles (10+ years) should be decanted more briefly and carefully, mainly to separate any sediment.

Producer
Domaine d’Eugénie is a relatively young name in Vosne-Romanée, but it carries the legacy of one of Burgundy’s most storied estates. Established in 2006 when François Pinault’s Artémis group purchased the former Domaine René Engel, the domaine quickly became a focus of serious investment, meticulous vineyard work and a more terroir-driven winemaking philosophy. Under the direction of winemaker Michel Mallard, the style has evolved from heavily oaked and somewhat muted to precise, expressive and quietly powerful, now earning renewed attention from collectors and critics alike. With holdings in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most prestigious appellations, including Grands-Echezeaux, Domaine d’Eugénie has firmly established itself as an important modern voice in the heart of Burgundy’s fine wine landscape.
