Description

The 2017 Domaine d'Eugénie Echezeaux Grand Cru is a poised and powerful expression of Vosne-Romanée’s legendary terroir, crafted from venerable, low-yielding Pinot Noir vines. In 2017, winemaker Michel Mallard has delivered a wine of striking energy and refinement, far removed from the more heavily oaked style of the estate’s early years. This Echezeaux marries depth and muscle with a newfound elegance, offering a Grand Cru that is both immediately seductive and built for the cellar. With one of the most north-easterly parcels in Echezeaux, planted on predominantly limestone soils with pockets of clay, Domaine d'Eugénie draws on an outstanding site with an average vine age of around 80 years. Trained using the Cordon de Royat system, these old vines yield concentrated, characterful fruit that translates into a darker, more powerful wine than the domaine’s Grands-Echezeaux. Historically part of the famed Domaine René Engel before becoming Domaine d’Eugénie under new ownership, this estate has rapidly re-earned the attention of serious Burgundy collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Echezeaux Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with subtle garnet reflections at the rim, hinting at its concentration and nascent complexity. The nose is immediately engaging and layered: ripe black cherry, wild blackberry and dark plum are framed by notes of violet, rose petal, and subtle forest floor. With air, more savoury nuances emerge—smoked tea, warm spice, a touch of licorice and finely integrated oak (clove, cocoa, a whisper of vanilla). On the palate, this is a more muscular and powerful expression of Echezeaux, as compared to the domaine’s Grands-Echezeaux. The dark fruit profile—black cherry, mulberry, and black raspberry—is deep and pure, supported by a fine yet firm lattice of ripe tannins. A pronounced mineral line, driven by the limestone-rich soils, gives the wine precision and length, while fresh, lifted acidity keeps the dense fruit remarkably lively. The finish is long and persistent, unfolding with notes of spice, dark chocolate, and stony salinity. While already seductive in its youth, this 2017 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 12–20 years, developing more tertiary complexity—truffle, sous-bois, and game—over time.

Production
Domaine d’Eugénie’s Echezeaux Grand Cru comes from one of the cru’s most north-eastern parcels, rooted in shallow, predominantly limestone soils interspersed with small areas of clay. This combination gives both tension and depth to the Pinot Noir, with naturally low yields from vines averaging around 80 years of age. The vineyard is trained using Cordon de Royat, which limits production and concentrates flavour in the remaining bunches. Harvest is carried out by hand, with strict sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine, optimally ripe fruit is used. Vinification is gentle and precise: the berries are typically destemmed (with potential inclusion of some whole clusters depending on the vintage), followed by a cold maceration to draw out colour and aroma. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats with careful extraction via pump-overs and punch-downs to preserve finesse. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels— a significant but judicious proportion new—where it rests on fine lees, allowing the tannins to refine and the oak to integrate seamlessly without overshadowing the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Noir is a natural partner for refined, savoury dishes that can match its depth and complexity. Classic pairings include roast duck with cherries, pigeon, or guinea fowl, as well as veal tenderloin with morel cream, or a simple rack of lamb with herbs. It also shines alongside game birds, mushroom-driven dishes, and truffle-inflected cuisine—think wild mushroom risotto, porcini tagliatelle, or roasted root vegetables with jus. For cheese, try aged Comté, Époisses, or a well-matured Tomme. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes will be sufficient to remove sediment and awaken the bouquet.

Producer
Domaine d’Eugénie is based in Vosne-Romanée and was established in 2006 following the acquisition of the historic vineyards of Domaine René Engel, one of Burgundy’s most respected names. Under the ownership of François Pinault (who also owns Château Latour in Bordeaux) and the stewardship of winemaker Michel Mallard, the domaine has undergone a quiet but impressive transformation, moving away from the heavier, oak-dominated style of its early years toward a more terroir-driven, precise expression of Pinot Noir. With holdings in some of the Côte de Nuits’ most coveted crus, including Echezeaux and Grands-Echezeaux, Domaine d’Eugénie has quickly reasserted itself as a serious reference in Vosne-Romanée. The 2017 vintage marks a high point in this evolution, showcasing the estate’s commitment to meticulous vineyard work, sensitive élevage, and wines that faithfully reflect their grand terroirs.
