Description

The 2017 Domaine d’Eugénie Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a refined and deeply expressive Burgundy, capturing the elegance of Pinot Noir from one of the Côte de Nuits’ most storied vineyards. This is a Grand Cru that marries power with poise, offering a multidimensional profile that remains true to its illustrious terroir. Once known for a more heavily oaked style, Domaine d’Eugénie has undergone a quiet revolution—today producing wines that are notably more nuanced, transparent, and terroir-driven.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru shows a luminous, deep ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and finesse. The nose is complex and inviting, opening with dark cherries, blackberries, and wild strawberries, layered with notes of violet, dried rose petal, and subtle forest floor. With air, more tertiary nuances appear—fine spice, cedar shavings, cocoa, and a touch of graphite over a core of mineral tension. On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet impeccably balanced, with a vibrant, juicy acidity that lifts the rich fruit. Flavors of black cherry, ripe red plum, and crushed raspberry interplay with savory notes of earth, truffle, and fine tea leaves. The tannins are firm yet satin-smooth, giving a polished structure that supports the wine rather than dominating it. The finish is long, well-defined, and precise, carrying persistent notes of mineral, spice, and dark berries. Already alluring in its youth, the 2017 has the concentration and structure to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness with time in bottle.

Production
Domaine d’Eugénie’s holding in Clos Vougeot extends over 1.37 hectares, situated in the prized upper portion of the vineyard, close to the historic château—an area widely recognized for producing some of the appellation’s most refined and age-worthy wines. Here, the vines average around 60 years of age, rooted in classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils, with deeper layers rich in fine clay silt that contribute both depth and power to the wine. The old vines, naturally low-yielding, are carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection of the best fruit. In the cellar, Michel Mallard favors a thoughtful, precision-led vinification, with gentle extraction to preserve elegance and purity of fruit. The wine is traditionally fermented and then matured in French oak barrels—typically with a well-judged proportion of new oak—allowing the Grand Cru character and vineyard signature to shine through without being overshadowed by wood.

Food & Serving
This Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a superb match for refined, richly flavored dishes that can complement its depth and structure. Think roast duck with cherry or red wine reduction, venison loin, côte de veau, braised beef cheeks, or rack of lamb with wild herbs. It also pairs beautifully with earthy components such as truffle-infused dishes, mushroom duxelles, or aged Burgundian cheeses like Époisses or Comté. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and freshness. For current drinking, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully unfurl; with more bottle age, a shorter decant or careful double decanting will be sufficient to remove any sediment and open up the bouquet.

Producer
Domaine d’Eugénie is a relatively young but already highly regarded estate in Vosne-Romanée, established in 2006 when François Pinault—owner of Château Latour in Bordeaux—acquired the historic vineyards of the former Domaine René Engel. Since then, under the guidance of winemaker Michel Mallard, the domaine has steadily refined its style, moving away from overt oak towards a more precise, terroir-focused expression of Burgundy. Today, Domaine d’Eugénie is seen as an important modern voice in the Côte de Nuits, with holdings in several prestigious appellations and a growing reputation for purity, finesse, and consistency. Its Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is regularly among the estate’s most lauded wines, underscoring the domaine’s status as a serious contender among the region’s top producers.
