Description
The 2017 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Grand Cru is a benchmark red Burgundy from one of Chambolle-Musigny’s most revered estates. Crafted entirely from Pinot Noir grown in the fabled Musigny Grand Cru vineyard, it offers a profound yet finely etched expression of this legendary terroir. In a vintage marked by careful yield control after the frosts of 2016, this wine stands out for its depth, precision and remarkable aging promise. What sets this Musigny apart is its combination of refinement and latent power: old vines, low yields and meticulous selection result in a wine of great intensity, but with the signature silkiness that defines Chambolle’s finest crus. Musigny has long been considered one of Burgundy’s greatest vineyards, and Comte de Vogüé is its historic reference point; few producers have been so closely associated with a single Grand Cru over generations.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Musigny Grand Cru is deep ruby with a youthful, vibrant sheen at the rim, hinting at both concentration and energy. The nose is complex and finely layered, opening initially with dark berry notes—black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant—before revealing subtler tones of iodine, black truffle, fresh fig and a gentle floral lift reminiscent of violets.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet wonderfully intense, with a silken entry that broadens into a more structured, lightly grainy texture. The dark fruit core is joined by glimpses of red cherry and wild strawberry as it moves across the palate, adding freshness and nuance. Savory notes of black truffle, a touch of forest floor and a whisper of white pepper and sage emerge toward the long, persistent finish. The tannins are fine but firm, currently holding the wine in a taut, coiled frame. Although already articulate in its aromatics, this 2017 Musigny is only beginning to close down in bottle and will benefit significantly from time: it has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for at least 15–25 years, with the real magic likely emerging after a decade in the cellar.
Production
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s Musigny parcels sit on some of the most prized terroir in Chambolle-Musigny, where thin, limestone-rich soils mixed with marl rest over a rocky subsoil. This distinctive combination provides excellent drainage and a natural stress on the vines, concentrating flavor and accentuating Pinot Noir’s finesse and perfume. The estate farms its vineyards with great care and respect for the land, keeping yields tightly controlled, particularly in 2017 after the severe frost of 2016. All grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and meticulously sorted to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in traditional open wooden vats, allowing for gentle extraction and precise temperature management. After fermentation, the wine is aged at length—typically 18 to 24 months—in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to frame, rather than dominate, the wine’s terroir-driven character.
Food & Serving
This Musigny Grand Cru is a natural partner for refined, delicately prepared dishes that match its complexity without overpowering its finesse. Consider pairing it with roasted pigeon or duck, veal with morel mushrooms, braised rabbit, or a simply prepared lamb saddle. Earthy elements such as black truffle, wild mushrooms or root vegetables echo the wine’s savory nuances beautifully, while aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gruyère also make an excellent match. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F). In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours helps the wine open, soften the tannins and release its aromatic layers; for more mature bottles, a gentle decant just before serving is recommended to separate any sediment while preserving nuance.
Producer
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is one of Burgundy’s most storied domaines, with a lineage in Chambolle-Musigny that stretches back to the 15th century. The estate is inextricably linked with Musigny, where it is the dominant owner and long-standing reference for both red and the exceedingly rare white Musigny Grand Cru. Its holdings span the most prestigious terroirs of Chambolle, and the domaine’s steadfast commitment to traditional, terroir-focused winemaking has made its wines among the most sought-after in the region. Notably, de Vogüé is the only producer permitted to craft white Musigny Grand Cru from its small Chardonnay parcel within the vineyard, a unique distinction in Burgundy. Over decades, the domaine has built a reputation for wines that combine finesse, longevity and an unmistakable sense of place, firmly securing its status as one of the great names of the Côte de Nuits.
