Description

From one of Montalcino’s most celebrated crus, the 2017 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso is a single‑vineyard expression of Sangiovese that marries power, precision and classic Tuscan elegance. Drawn from the historic Pianrosso plot in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, this Brunello is known for its mineral backbone and exceptional focus, even in a warm, dry vintage like 2017. With multiple 94-point scores from leading critics, it stands as a benchmark wine for those exploring serious, ageworthy Brunello.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Pianrosso shows a deep, luminous ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, already hinting at its evolution and concentration. The aromatics are strikingly pure and defined: notes of crushed red cherry, black plum and dried raspberry layered with rose petals, dried herbs, anise and hints of sweet tobacco. A distinct mineral character emerges in the form of crushed limestone and chalk dust, giving the bouquet a cool, sculpted edge despite the warm year. On the palate, this is a fuller, more assertive interpretation of Brunello compared to Ciacci’s classic bottling. Ripe red and dark fruits are framed by firm yet well‑polished tannins and a vibrant, salty acidity that carries the wine in a long, precise line across the tongue. The mineral notes perceived on the nose translate into a tactile sense of grip and focus, with hints of leather, balsamic undertones, spice box and subtle oak integration. While already compelling with ample air, the structure and concentration suggest a long life ahead; properly stored, it should evolve beautifully over 12–20 years, gaining complexity, softness and savory depth.

Production
The Pianrosso vineyard sits on the cooler, well‑exposed slopes behind Castelnuovo dell’Abate in southern Montalcino, with south-facing rows and well‑drained, stony soils rich in limestone and galestro. This terroir was crucial in 2017’s warm, dry season, allowing the organically farmed Sangiovese vines to retain freshness and aromatic finesse while achieving full phenolic ripeness. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel to ensure optimal selection, then gently destemmed and fermented in temperature‑controlled tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, fine tannins and aromatic complexity. Maturation traditionally follows in large Slavonian oak casks, which respect the character of the fruit and vineyard, lending subtle spice and texture without overwhelming the wine’s mineral and varietal purity.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for rich, savory Tuscan cuisine: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow‑braised beef or lamb shanks, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, mushroom risotto or aged Pecorino Toscano. The wine’s structure and mineral drive also work beautifully with truffle dishes and roasted game birds. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Brunello stems to allow the bouquet to expand. In its youth, especially for the 2017 vintage, decanting for 1½–3 hours is strongly recommended to soften the tannins and fully reveal the layered aromatics; older bottles will benefit from a more gentle 30–60 minute decant to separate sediment and open up gracefully.

Producer
Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona traces its roots back to a 17th‑century palazzo in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, where the estate’s wines were vinified for generations before a modern winery was built just outside the village. The property came under the stewardship of the Bianchini family, with Giuseppe Bianchini laying the foundation for its current reputation and his son, former professional cyclist Paolo Bianchini, taking over the reins and elevating quality even further. Today, Ciacci Piccolomini is regarded as one of the key reference points in the southern part of Montalcino, known for combining traditional large-cask aging with precise vineyard work and certified organic farming. The Pianrosso cru, in particular, has earned consistent high scores from international critics and a loyal following among collectors, cementing the estate’s status as a standard-bearer for terroir-driven Brunello di Montalcino.
