Description
The 2017 Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac Grand Cru Classé is a poised, classically styled left-bank Bordeaux that showcases the estate’s biodynamic precision in a more restrained, elegant vintage. This Fifth Growth from Pauillac delivers the hallmark combination of graphite, cassis, and fine tannins, wrapped in remarkable purity and freshness. Classified in 1855 and revitalized under the Tesseron family, Pontet-Canet has risen to near–First Growth status in recent decades, making this wine a reference point for modern, terroir-driven Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Pontet-Canet shows a deep ruby to garnet core with a vibrant, almost luminous edge, reflecting both concentration and freshness. The nose is precise and layered: blackcurrant, black cherry, and wild berries interwoven with graphite, cedar, violets, crushed stone, and a touch of tobacco leaf and cocoa. Subtle notes of pencil shavings and fine spice hint at well-judged oak.
On the palate, this vintage leans toward finesse over sheer power. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a taut, linear structure with ripe but fine-grained tannins and a spine of fresh acidity. Flavors of cassis, blackberry, and plum are laced with savory notes of cigar box, licorice, and earth, finishing long with a salty-mineral kick that is very Pauillac. While already approachable with proper aeration, the wine has the structure to evolve beautifully over 15–20 years, gaining complexity and softness with time in the cellar.
Production
Sourced from the deep gravel soils of Pauillac, overlying clay and limestone, Château Pontet-Canet’s vineyards sit adjacent to some of the most revered estates in the Médoc. The terroir, marked by well-draining gravel mounds and the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary, is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The estate is fully certified organic and biodynamic, with meticulous, hand-harvested fruit picked parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, Pontet-Canet favors a gentle, non-interventionist approach, using gravity flow, natural fermentations in concrete and oak vats, and a thoughtful élevage that combines French oak barrels (a portion new) with concrete amphorae to preserve purity of fruit, energy, and a clear expression of place.
Food & Serving
This Pauillac is a natural partner for classic French and hearty, savory cuisine. Think roast lamb with herbs, grilled ribeye or entrecôte, duck breast, venison, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or truffle. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort, or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. For current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully unfurl; more mature bottles can be decanted gently just before serving to separate them from any sediment.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet, classified as a Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, is one of Pauillac’s great overachievers. The estate was founded in the 18th century by Jean-François de Pontet and later expanded by the Canet family, giving the property its name. Since the Tesseron family took over in 1975, Pontet-Canet has undergone a remarkable qualitative renaissance, becoming a global benchmark for biodynamic viticulture in Bordeaux. The shift to organic and then biodynamic farming, along with careful vineyard and cellar work, has led to a series of critically acclaimed vintages—particularly 2009 and 2010—that have cemented its reputation as one of the most exciting and visionary châteaux on the Left Bank.
