In the glass, the 2017 Pape Clément Rouge shows a deep garnet core with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is layered and expressive: notes of blackcurrant, ripe plum and redcurrant mingle with crushed stones, iron, and warm earth, followed by nuances of cigar box, tobacco leaf, black tea, graphite, and a touch of violet and rose petal. A subtle frame of cedar, smoke and fine-grained oak spice rounds out the bouquet. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, combining generous, ripe fruit with a striking freshness and mineral tension. Flavours of cassis, black cherry and wild berries unfold gradually, supported by fine, chalky tannins and well-judged oak. There is a savoury, smoky edge typical of top Graves, with hints of cocoa, dried herbs and black tea on the very long, precise finish. While already approachable with aeration, the structure and acidity suggest very good aging potential; expect this wine to evolve gracefully over 12–18 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and silkier texture with time in bottle.

Production
Château Pape Clément’s red vineyard lies on classic Graves terroir: deep gravel soils layered over clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage, heat retention and a distinctive mineral imprint. The 2017 blend is typically around 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, with the Cabernet bringing structure and freshness and the Merlot adding plushness and aromatic generosity. The grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then rigorously sorted to ensure only the healthiest berries make it to the cuverie. Fermentation takes place in a combination of temperature-controlled vats and small oak or concrete vessels, allowing for gentle extraction and precision in handling each lot. After fermentation and malolactic conversion (largely in barrel), the wine is aged for about 18 months in French oak barriques, approximately 60% new and the remainder one-year-old barrels, adding polish, fine tannins and subtle spice without overwhelming the fruit or the signature Graves character.

The 2017 Château Pape Clément Rouge is a versatile partner for refined, flavourful cuisine. It shines alongside roasted or grilled lamb (rack or saddle), entrecôte or ribeye steaks, duck breast, and game birds such as guinea fowl. Its earthy, smoky nuances also make it a superb match for dishes with mushrooms, truffle, or roasted root vegetables, as well as aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) in large Bordeaux stems; for current drinking, decant for 1–2 hours to let the aromatics fully unfurl and the tannins soften, while more mature bottles will benefit from a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment.

Château Pape Clément is one of Bordeaux’s most storied estates, with vine-growing history dating back to the early 14th century. The property takes its name from Bertrand de Got, who became Pope Clément V and received the estate as a gift, making it one of the oldest continuously cultivated vineyards in Bordeaux. Located in Pessac-Léognan within the Graves appellation, it is classified as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves and has long been a reference for both red and white wines from the Left Bank. Under the modern stewardship of Bernard Magrez, significant investment in the vineyard and cellar has propelled quality to a level that often rivals the great premiers crus of the Médoc, a fact regularly confirmed by top international critics and high scores across recent vintages.
