Description
The 2017 Château Palmer Margaux Grand Cru Classé is a poised, deeply refined expression of one of Bordeaux’s most beloved estates. A blend of 54% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, it captures the hallmark velvet texture and perfumed elegance that have made Palmer a modern icon in Margaux. In a vintage that favored precision over power, this wine stands out for its purity, grace, and exceptional aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Château Palmer shows a deep garnet-purple color, dense at the core with a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose is immediately serious and complex: layered aromas of ripe blackcurrants, warm plums and blackberry compote are laced with cedar shavings, pencil lead, violets, dark chocolate, star anise and a hint of exotic sandalwood.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied yet wonderfully vibrant, with a core of crisp, pure black fruit framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins. There is a striking freshness that lifts the flavors and carries them through to a very long, mineral-tinged finish. Still tightly coiled, it will benefit from 5–7 years of cellaring before it truly blossoms, and has the structure and concentration to evolve beautifully through 2060 and beyond.
Production
Château Palmer’s vineyards lie on the deep, well-drained gravel soils of Margaux, interspersed with sand and traces of clay that favor both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, while Petit Verdot adds spice and structure. The estate is known for meticulous, plot-by-plot vineyard management, with low yields and careful hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. Vinification is conducted in temperature-controlled vats, with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic complexity, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new) that integrate slowly into the wine, enhancing texture and layering without overwhelming the natural character of the fruit or the distinct Margaux terroir.
Food & Serving
This 2017 Palmer is a superb partner for refined dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal chops, or classic French cuisine like pigeon, duck breast, or beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, mushroom-based sauces and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. If opened young, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the bouquet and texture to fully open; with more bottle age, a gentle 1-hour decanting is sufficient to separate any sediment and let the wine show its layered complexity.
Producer
Château Palmer, classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification, has long stood shoulder to shoulder with the greatest names of the Médoc thanks to its singularly opulent yet refined style. Located in the heart of Margaux, the estate has become renowned for its unusually high proportion of Merlot for a Left Bank property, contributing to its trademark silkiness and perfume. Over the past decades, Palmer has embraced rigorous viticulture, including biodynamic practices, and an uncompromising focus on quality from vineyard to bottle. Critically acclaimed across vintages and consistently ranked among the top wines of Bordeaux, Château Palmer today is regarded as one of the region’s benchmark producers, crafting wines of depth, longevity and unmistakable character.
