Description

The 2017 Château Mouton Rothschild Grand Cru Classé is a benchmark Pauillac from one of Bordeaux’s most revered First Growth estates. Crafted in a challenging yet ultimately rewarding vintage, this wine captures the estate’s signature power, precision, and hedonistic charm in a more classical, finely etched frame. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, 2017 Mouton offers an earlier-drinking expression of this legendary château, without sacrificing depth or pedigree.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Mouton Rothschild is a deep, vibrant garnet with a nearly opaque core and a youthful purple rim. The nose opens with cassis, blackcurrant, and blackberry, layered with graphite, cedar, pencil shavings, cigar box, and subtle notes of violets, dark chocolate, and spice. With air, hints of roasted coffee, licorice, and warm gravel emerge, underlining its Pauillac origins. On the palate, this is a poised and beautifully sculpted wine, medium to full-bodied with refined concentration rather than sheer weight. Ripe blackcurrant and plum fruit are supported by fine-grained, polished tannins and a lively, fresh acidity that keeps everything in perfect balance. The mid-palate reveals savory tones of tobacco leaf, crushed stones, and subtle smoke, leading into a long, elegant finish with lingering notes of cassis, cocoa, and spice. While already approachable with proper aeration, this 2017 has solid aging potential—expect it to develop additional complexity over 15–25 years, with its best window likely from the late 2020s through the 2040s.

Production
Sourced from the exceptional gravelly soils of Pauillac in the Médoc, the 2017 Mouton Rothschild reflects a terroir of deep gravel over limestone and clay, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard benefits from its proximity to the Gironde estuary, which moderates temperatures and protects against extremes, especially crucial in a vintage like 2017. The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and a small proportion of Petit Verdot, all hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, the grapes undergo strict sorting and are vinified in temperature-controlled vats, with each plot fermented separately to preserve its character. The wine is then aged in 100% new French oak barrels, where it spends around 18–20 months, with regular rackings and meticulous care to integrate the oak and build structure, finesse, and aromatic complexity.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Mouton Rothschild is a natural partner for classic French cuisine and refined meat dishes. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, venison, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté, Ossau-Iraty, or mature cheddar. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Younger bottles will benefit from 1.5–2 hours in a decanter to soften the tannins and fully open the bouquet, while more mature bottles should be handled gently and decanted briefly only to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious estates, elevated to First Growth (Premier Cru Classé) status in 1973 after a relentless campaign by Baron Philippe de Rothschild—making it the only château ever to be reclassified in the 1855 hierarchy. Located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Mouton is renowned not only for the opulence and character of its wines, but also for its unique tradition of commissioning a different artist each year to design its label, turning each vintage into a small work of art. The estate has long been a standard-bearer for Cabernet Sauvignon and modern château bottling practices, and it remains a global reference point for collectors, consistently producing some of the most coveted and age-worthy wines of the Médoc.
