Description

The 2017 Château Montrose Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé is a poised, classically structured Médoc that showcases the power of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance expected of a top-tier Bordeaux. Crafted from a rigorous selection at every stage of production, it captures the essence of the Saint-Estèphe appellation: depth, finesse, and remarkable aging capacity. This Grand Cru Classé, representing only 37% of the estate’s total production, stands firmly in the long line of age-worthy Montrose vintages that have made the château a benchmark in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Montrose is a deep garnet-purple, almost opaque at the core, hinting at its intensity and youth. The nose is initially reserved, then slowly unfurls to reveal layers of black cherry conserve, warm cassis, and baked plum, supported by notes of redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate, licorice, and exotic cardamom. A subtle hint of candied violet and gentle oak spice adds floral lift and complexity. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a striking combination of power and restraint. The core of ripe black fruits is pure and focused, framed by ultra-fine, super-ripe tannins that feel velvety rather than aggressive. There is impressive freshness running through the wine, giving precision and length to the finish. The structure and balance suggest a long evolution in bottle: while already sophisticated in its youth, this 2017 has a substantial aging potential, with a drinking window extending comfortably through 2060 and beyond for well-stored bottles.

Production
Sourced from the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Estèphe, overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Montrose benefits from a cool, maritime-influenced terroir that is ideal for late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 blend is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, reflecting the estate’s focus on Cabernet-driven structure and finesse. The fruit is meticulously sorted and harvested parcel by parcel to capture optimal ripeness and purity. Vinification is carried out with precision in the winery, followed by an élevage of 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 60% are new and 40% are one year old. This careful use of oak enhances texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s fruit or terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Château Montrose is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, dry-aged ribeye, braised beef cheeks, or game such as venison or duck. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle-infused cuisine, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decant for 1.5–3 hours to allow the wine to open and reveal its aromatic complexity; with bottle age, a gentle decant of 30–60 minutes is usually sufficient to separate sediment and let the bouquet blossom.

Producer
Château Montrose is one of the great names of Saint-Estèphe and a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Classification of the Médoc. The estate’s gravelly hillside vineyards, lying close to the Gironde, have long been recognized as a privileged site for Cabernet Sauvignon, producing wines renowned for their depth, structure, and extraordinary longevity. Over the decades, Montrose has built a reputation for consistency and for crafting some truly legendary vintages, including 1921, 1929, 1982, 1990, and 2009. Today, the château remains a reference point in the appellation and across Bordeaux, known for its meticulous vineyard management, precise winemaking, and a style that marries power with refinement and age-worthy complexity.
