Description

Bottled exclusively in magnum, the 2017 Château Magrez Le Peyre Saint-Estèphe is a limited-production Bordeaux that marries power, precision and elegance in a format made for the table and the cellar. Crafted under the guidance of renowned vintner and entrepreneur Bernard Magrez, this cuvée showcases a richly structured, modern Saint-Estèphe with a strong sense of place. With a blend dominated by Merlot and complemented by Cabernet Franc, it offers a velvety, fruit‑driven expression of Bordeaux that has already earned praise from critics, including 92–93 points from James Suckling for its juicy mid‑palate and silky tannins. The magnum format enhances its aging potential and presentation, making it an exceptional choice for collectors, gifting, or special occasions. Produced from a very small vineyard holding and harvested entirely by hand, this is a rare opportunity to experience Bernard Magrez’s meticulous, high-end winemaking in Saint-Estèphe. Although Château Magrez Le Peyre is a relatively new label (acquired in 2016), it draws on Bordeaux’s long tradition of fine wine to deliver a bottle that feels both contemporary and classic.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Château Magrez Le Peyre presents a deep, dense ruby hue with youthful purple reflections along the rim, particularly vivid in this magnum format. The nose is generous and layered: ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum lead, supported by nuances of vanilla, mocha, cocoa, sweet spice and a touch of cedar from its élevage in French oak. Subtle undertones of graphite, tobacco leaf and dried herbs add complexity as the wine opens. On the palate, this is full-bodied and concentrated, yet impressively polished. A core of juicy black fruits—cassis, black cherry and damson—flows across the mid‑palate, wrapped in fine-grained, firm yet silkily textured tannins. Notes of dark chocolate, espresso, roasted spice and well-judged oak are seamlessly integrated, giving depth without overpowering the fruit. The structure is classic Bordeaux: a fresh, lifted finish with good acidity that keeps the wine vibrant and food‑friendly, extending into a long, refined aftertaste. In magnum, the 2017 has excellent aging potential; it can be enjoyed now with a decant, but will continue to gain complexity and tertiary nuances—leather, truffle, forest floor—over the next 8–15 years, and likely longer under proper cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Magrez Le Peyre’s vines occupy a small, carefully tended estate in the Saint-Estèphe area of Bordeaux, planted primarily to Merlot with a complementary share of Cabernet Franc. The terroir combines clay and limestone soils—hallmarks of this part of Bordeaux—which provide excellent water regulation and encourage deep root systems, yielding grapes with concentration, freshness and natural balance. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the winery to ensure only pristine, optimally ripe fruit goes into the final blend. Vinification takes place in modern, temperature-controlled facilities designed to respect fruit purity while allowing for precision at every stage. Fermentations are carefully managed to extract color, flavor and tannin without harshness, combining traditional Bordeaux know‑how with contemporary techniques. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured in French oak barrels, including a proportion of new oak, which contributes structure, spice and aromatic complexity. The relatively small scale of production allows for meticulous lot-by-lot handling, resulting in a cuvée that is both concentrated and finely sculpted.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Château Magrez Le Peyre Magnum is an excellent companion to richly flavored, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with roast or grilled red meats such as rib‑eye steak, lamb chops, beef tenderloin or slow-braised short ribs, as well as duck breast, venison and other game. Classic French fare—duck confit, cassoulet, bordelaise-style dishes and mushroom-based sauces—highlight its earthy and spicy dimensions. Mature hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda, Manchego), truffle-infused dishes, and roasted root vegetables also complement its depth and structure. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18 °C (about 60–64 °F). In magnum format and given its youth, decanting is highly recommended: 1–2 hours before serving will help the wine fully express its aromatic complexity and soften the tannins. If enjoyed in its early drinking window, a longer decant of up to 3 hours is beneficial; as it ages and develops more tertiary notes, a shorter decant will suffice to awaken the wine without overexposing it.

Producer
Château Magrez Le Peyre is part of the prestigious portfolio of Bernard Magrez, one of Bordeaux’s most influential vintners, who acquired the estate in 2016. Based in Bordeaux and best known for ownership of several top properties—including classified growths—Magrez has built a reputation for crafting high-quality, characterful wines that faithfully reflect their terroir. While Château Magrez Le Peyre itself is a relatively small and exclusive project, this limited scale allows for a highly artisanal approach in both vineyard and cellar. Situated in one of Bordeaux’s most esteemed areas, the estate benefits from the technical expertise, resources and international perspective of the broader Bernard Magrez group, while remaining focused on precision and quality over volume. The wines have quickly attracted attention for their depth, purity and modern polish, culminating in strong critical recognition, such as the 92–93 point rating from James Suckling for this 2017 vintage. As a result, Château Magrez Le Peyre has become a sought‑after insider’s choice for those looking to explore the more boutique, cutting-edge side of Bordeaux, especially in large formats like this magnum.
