Description

2017 Château Léoville Las Cases is a benchmark Saint-Julien from one of the most revered estates in the Médoc, often spoken of in the same breath as the First Growths. Crafted predominantly from old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a deeply structured, ageworthy red that perfectly captures the classical elegance of great Left Bank Bordeaux. The Grand Vin comes from the historic heart of the original Léoville estate, a site that has been celebrated since the 17th century for producing wines of power, finesse and remarkable longevity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Château Léoville Las Cases shows a deep garnet-purple hue, dense at the core with a vibrant rim hinting at its youth and energy. The nose opens gradually, revealing layers of blackcurrant and blackberry, supported by notes of dark plum, black tea leaves and graphite. With air, more complex nuances emerge: dark chocolate shavings, cedar box, licorice, and a gentle hint of tobacco and dried violets. On the palate, this is both precise and powerful, with a firm Cabernet-driven backbone. Flavors of blackcurrant, blueberry and ripe black cherry are wrapped in finely woven tannins, giving a mouth-filling yet controlled texture. The mid-palate shows impressive depth and tension, balancing ripe dark fruit with fresh acidity and savory mineral tones from the gravelly soils. Subtle notes of cocoa, cedar and spice from élevage in oak add further dimension without dominating. The finish is very long, linear and refined, promising excellent aging potential. While already showing elegance and approachability in its youth, this 2017 will reward cellaring over the next 10–25 years, gaining complexity, silkier texture and tertiary notes of cigar box and truffle.

Production
The vineyards of Château Léoville Las Cases lie in the northern part of Saint-Julien, directly adjacent to Pauillac and the famed vineyards of Château Latour. Here, deep, well-drained gravel over sand and clay, combined with the moderating influence of the nearby Gironde estuary, creates an ideal microclimate for late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 Grand Vin is sourced from vines aged 50 to 90 years, a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot, harvested by hand between 15 September and 4 October. Bunches are meticulously sorted before traditional vinification in temperature-controlled vessels, allowing each parcel to ferment separately to preserve its character. After fermentation and maceration designed to extract fine tannins and pure fruit, the wine is aged in French oak barrels (with a significant proportion new), where it develops structure, complexity and integration before bottling at around 13.28% alcohol.

Food & Serving
This 2017 Léoville Las Cases is a natural partner for refined, protein-rich dishes that can match its structure and depth. Think classic roast lamb with rosemary, côte de boeuf, venison, or slow-braised beef short ribs, as well as game birds like roast duck or pigeon. It also pairs beautifully with hard, aged cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or Manchego, and with mushroom-based dishes featuring truffle or wild mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky tannins. In its youth, a decant of 1.5–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open fully; as it matures, a shorter decant of 30–45 minutes will be sufficient to remove any sediment and awaken the bouquet.

Producer
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the oldest and most storied estates in the Médoc, tracing its roots back to the vast Domaine de Léoville, once owned by some of France’s wealthiest and most influential noble families. Following the upheavals of the French Revolution, the original estate was divided between 1826 and 1840, and from three-fifths of that historic property, centered on its finest terroirs, Château Léoville Las Cases emerged. Since the late 19th century, the estate has been in the hands of the same family, with Jean-Hubert Delon today serving as sole owner and steward, also overseeing Château Potensac in the Médoc and Château Nénin in Pomerol. Classified as a Second Growth in 1855 but often regarded as a “super second,” Léoville Las Cases is widely recognized for producing some of the most profound, long-lived wines of Saint-Julien—wines that stand among the elite of Bordeaux in terms of precision, terroir expression and aging capacity.
