Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Léoville Barton shows a deep garnet-purple hue with a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose opens slowly but confidently, revealing layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry, intertwined with graphite, cedar, cigar box and crushed violets. Subtle notes of pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, baking spices and a touch of cocoa emerge with air, underlining its classic Médoc character. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, taut and beautifully structured, driven by Cabernet Sauvignon’s firm, fine-grained tannins. Flavors of cassis, plum and black cherry are framed by fresh acidity, giving the wine precision and lift rather than heaviness. Savory notes of cedar, graphite, cigar box and a hint of earthy minerality carry through on a long, focused finish. Still youthful, it is approachable with proper aeration but will reward patience; optimal drinking will likely be from 2025–2040, with potential to evolve gracefully beyond that in good cellaring conditions.

Production
Château Léoville Barton draws its fruit from prime gravelly soils in Saint-Julien, where deep layers of Garonne gravel over clay provide excellent drainage and encourage Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen slowly and evenly. The 2017 blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc adding flesh and aromatic complexity. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with careful sorting of the grapes to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it into the vats. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, parcel by parcel, allowing a precise expression of each plot. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new, often around 60%) for roughly 16–18 months, during which time it undergoes malolactic fermentation and careful racking, integrating the oak while preserving the estate’s hallmark structure and freshness.

This is a quintessential fine Bordeaux for the table, shining alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, grilled ribeye, entrecôte with béarnaise, duck breast, or beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. In its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open; as the wine matures, a gentler 30–60 minute decant will help it show at its best while preserving its more delicate tertiary notes.
