Description

The 2017 Château l'Eglise-Clinet Pomerol is a poised and powerful Right Bank Bordeaux, showcasing the pedigree of one of Pomerol’s most coveted estates. Sitting side by side with the legendary Petrus vineyards, this wine delivers a complex, deeply layered expression of Merlot and Cabernet Franc in a classically styled vintage. Combining concentration with freshness, it offers both immediate pleasure and excellent cellaring potential. What sets the 2017 l’Eglise-Clinet apart is its remarkable depth of black fruit and spice wrapped in velvety tannins, all drawn from a tiny 4.2-hectare vineyard on prime clay and gravel soils. These same parcels have been cultivated since the 19th century and, in their current form since the mid-20th century, have built a reputation for producing some of the most sought-after wines in Pomerol—and indeed in all of Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 l’Eglise-Clinet shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, youthful yet already inviting. The nose opens slowly at first—almost brooding—before unfurling into powerful aromas of baked black plum, chocolate-covered cherry and blueberry compote. Subtle layers of grilled meat, mocha and anise emerge with air, followed by a faint hint of tar and warm earth, adding gravitas and complexity. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, with a core of vibrant, crisp black fruit that feels both concentrated and finely etched. The tannins are wonderfully ripe and rounded, giving a plush texture without heaviness, while a vibrant line of acidity brings lift and precision. Flavors of dark berries, cocoa, roasted coffee bean and savory spice linger on a long, sapid finish. While already compelling after a proper decant, this vintage has the structure and freshness to age gracefully for 12–20 years, developing more truffle, tobacco and tertiary nuances with time in bottle.

Production
Château l’Eglise-Clinet’s vines are planted on Pomerol’s prized mix of clay and gravel, soils renowned for producing Merlot of great depth and Cabernet Franc of striking aromatic intensity. The small, contiguous vineyard lies in the very heart of the appellation, bordered by some of the most hallowed names in Bordeaux, including Château Petrus. Yields are naturally limited, and harvesting is carried out by hand, allowing strict selection of only the healthiest, ripest bunches at optimal maturity. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux vinification is combined with meticulous modern precision: the grapes are carefully sorted, fermented in temperature-controlled vats, and then aged in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to polish the tannins and add subtle notes of spice and toast, without overshadowing the purity of the fruit and the signature of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Pomerol is a natural partner for rich, refined dishes: think roast lamb with rosemary, beef tenderloin with truffle jus, slow-braised short ribs, or duck breast with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, game birds, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or old Gouda, which echo its earthy and savory dimensions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range. In its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to encourage the wine to open up and reveal its darker fruit and spice complexity; with more bottle age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant is sufficient to separate any sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.

Producer
Château l’Eglise-Clinet is one of Pomerol’s benchmark estates, with a history traced back to the 19th century and its current form established in the mid-20th century by the Mauléon and Rouchut families. Situated on the plateau of Pomerol, the property’s compact 4.2 hectares occupy some of the appellation’s most coveted clay and gravel parcels—immediately adjacent to the vineyards of Château Petrus. Over the decades, l’Eglise-Clinet has risen from relative obscurity to sit among the elite of Bordeaux, consistently producing wines of striking intensity, longevity and finesse. Its limited production and unwavering commitment to quality have earned it a loyal following from collectors and critics worldwide, making each vintage a highly anticipated release.
