Description

2017 Château Le Boscq Saint-Estèphe is a classic left-bank Bordeaux with a modern, polished edge, offering depth and structure without feeling forbidding. This medium to deep purple-hued red marries the appellation’s trademark power with a surprising approachability, especially for a full-blooded Saint-Estèphe. Crafted from 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot and certified Terra Vitis, it combines pedigree, precision and sustainability at a very strong price-to-quality ratio. The wine stands out for its nuanced balance of muscular tannins and vibrant freshness, carrying aromas of tar, new leather, blackcurrant and mulberry wrapped in cedar and graphite notes. Rooted in a 19th-century estate now under the highly regarded Dourthe umbrella, Château Le Boscq channels the historic strength of Saint-Estèphe into a wine that can be enjoyed earlier than many of its peers, yet still offers solid cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Château Le Boscq shows a medium to deep purple colour with an almost opaque core, brightened by a youthful crimson rim. The nose opens a touch brooding at first, then unfurls notes of tar and new leather over a core of warm red and black fruits—ripe redcurrant and cassis, mulberries and dark berries—layered with cedar shavings, menthol and pencil lead. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a distinctly Saint-Estèphe structure: a firm frame of grainy, well-shaped tannins and plenty of fresh acidity driving the wine. The fruit profile mirrors the nose, with juicy red and blackcurrant, mulberry and black cherry supported by savoury cedar, graphite and a subtle minty lift. The finish is long, dry and persistent, with the tannin and fresh fruit working in tandem. While it is more approachable in its youth than many vintages from the appellation—expected to drink well from around 5 years after harvest—it should continue to evolve gracefully for 10–15 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and softness in bottle.

Production
Château Le Boscq’s 20 hectares of vineyards lie in the Saint-Estèphe appellation of the Médoc, an area renowned for its robust, ageworthy wines. Here, a mix of clay and limestone subsoils ensures excellent water retention, particularly beneficial in dry years, while a surface layer of gravel and pebbles provides efficient drainage and heat retention, helping Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot achieve full, even ripeness. The vines are planted to the classic Bordeaux trio—predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot—and cultivated with a strong focus on environmental stewardship, as evidenced by the Terra Vitis certification. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted to retain only the best fruit, then vinified in a traditional Bordeaux manner. Fermentation in temperature-controlled vats is followed by maturation in French oak barrels, which adds complexity, structure and refined spice without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
2017 Château Le Boscq Saint-Estèphe is a natural partner for hearty, flavourful dishes that can stand up to its structure and tannin, such as roasted or grilled lamb, beef ribeye, braised short ribs, duck confit or slow-cooked game. It also pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine like entrecôte with Béarnaise, cassoulet, or dishes featuring mushrooms, truffles and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; in its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to open fully. As it gains bottle age, a shorter decant to remove sediment and gently aerate the wine will suffice.

Producer
Château Le Boscq traces its origins back to the 19th century and has long been recognised as a serious Saint-Estèphe property, known for producing structured, characterful wines. Now owned and managed by Dourthe—one of Bordeaux’s most respected wine companies—the estate benefits from both its historic vineyards and modern, quality-driven viticulture and winemaking. Situated in one of the Médoc’s six communal appellations, just north of Pauillac, Le Boscq embodies the hallmarks of Saint-Estèphe: depth of colour, firm tannic backbone and excellent aging capacity. The estate’s commitment to sustainable practices, reflected in its Terra Vitis certification, and its consistent quality have cemented Château Le Boscq’s reputation as a reliable source of classic, ageworthy Bordeaux offering outstanding value within its prestigious region.
