Château Haut-Brion lies on the gravelly terraces of Pessac-Léognan, just south of Bordeaux, where deep Günzian gravels mixed with sand and clay provide perfect drainage and heat retention—ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, with a touch of Petit Verdot. The estate’s vineyards are meticulously tended, with careful bunch selection and predominantly hand harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe grapes reach the winery. Vinification is parcel by parcel, allowing each plot to express its identity before blending. Haut-Brion is historically innovative: one of the first great châteaux to adopt stainless-steel fermentation tanks, which they pair with traditional élevage in a high proportion of new French oak barrels. The result is a wine that combines classical Bordeaux structure with a signature smoky, earthy complexity that is unmistakably Haut-Brion.

Château Haut-Brion is the oldest and historically one of the most storied estates in the Gironde, widely credited as the first Bordeaux estate to bottle and promote a single-vineyard wine back in the 17th century. Its wines were already celebrated in London’s coffee houses and praised by leading writers long before the 1855 Classification, where it was named one of the original Premier Grand Cru Classé estates. In 1935, the château was purchased by American financier Clarence Dillon, whose family has since invested heavily in renovating the cellars and vineyards, including pioneering the adoption of stainless-steel tanks in 1960 and later acquiring neighboring Château La Mission Haut-Brion. Today, Château Haut-Brion stands as a reference point for Pessac-Léognan and for Bordeaux as a whole, consistently producing wines that marry early charm with extraordinary longevity.
