Description
The 2017 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Julien is a poised, classical Médoc that showcases the estate’s hallmark elegance and precision in a cooler, finely structured vintage. Seamlessly marrying intensity with freshness, it highlights the depth of Cabernet Sauvignon from Ducru’s famed gravel soils. As a Second Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) from the legendary 1855 Classification, this wine carries both historic pedigree and a reputation as one of the most refined expressions of Left Bank Bordeaux.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a deep, dark purple with a vibrant rim, hinting at both concentration and energy. The nose unfolds gradually, revealing layers of warm cherry liqueur, wild blueberries, fresh red and black currants, and a delicate floral lift of violets. Subtle undertones of forest floor, Earl Grey tea, and fine cedar add nuance and complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this is a medium-bodied yet wonderfully complete Saint-Julien, driven by bright acidity and remarkable finesse. The 90% Cabernet Sauvignon core delivers a precise, linear structure, wrapped in lush, polished tannins that are already very well integrated. Perfumed dark and red fruits glide through the mid-palate, joined by hints of graphite, spice, and dried tea leaf, leading to a long, gently spicy finish. While already approachable with proper aeration, this vintage has the balance and structure to evolve gracefully for 15–20 years, gaining further complexity and silkiness over time.
Production
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s name derives from the ‘beautiful pebbles’ (beaux cailloux) that define its terroir: deep, well-drained Günzian gravel soils overlooking the Gironde estuary in Saint-Julien. These poor, stony soils naturally limit yields and encourage deep root systems, producing small, concentrated berries with excellent aromatic purity and tannic finesse. The 2017 blend is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, sourced from some of the estate’s prime parcels. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with meticulous sorting to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels, lending polish, structure, and subtle spice without overwhelming the wine’s inherent elegance.
Food & Serving
This refined Saint-Julien shines alongside classic dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, dry-aged ribeye, beef Wellington, or venison with a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-infused dishes, mushroom ragouts, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open; as it matures, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is sufficient to remove any sediment and awaken the bouquet.
Producer
Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most revered names in Bordeaux, a Second Growth estate from the 1855 Classification that has come to rival many First Growths in reputation and consistency. Located in the heart of Saint-Julien, the property has been under the stewardship of the Borie family since the mid-20th century, with Bruno Borie elevating quality even further in recent decades. Ducru-Beaucaillou is renowned for producing wines of remarkable elegance, depth, and longevity that epitomize the finesse of Saint-Julien. Frequently lauded by critics and collectors alike, the château has become a benchmark for Left Bank Cabernet Sauvignon and a flagship for the appellation on the world stage.
