Description

The 2017 Château Calon-Ségur Saint-Estèphe Grand Cru Classé is a quintessential expression of this beloved Left Bank estate: refined, soulful and built on Cabernet Sauvignon’s poised power. It combines rare intensity with an almost Burgundian delicacy, delivering a wine that feels both classic and quietly luxurious. As one of the historic Third Growths of Bordeaux, Calon-Ségur continues to honor its legacy with a grand vin that is deeply rooted in its singular terroir.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Calon-Ségur shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, signaling freshness and concentration without excess weight. The nose opens with warm plums, blackcurrant (cassis) and baked black cherries, layered with mulberry, cedar, and subtle notes of earth and smoked meat. As it evolves in the glass, more complex tones appear: hints of lavender, black olive and a faint mineral edge. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, elegantly framed Saint-Estèphe with impressive intensity and precision. The core of dark fruit is supported by firm yet finely grained tannins and a vibrant line of acidity, giving the wine focus and length. Flavors of ripe plum, cassis and black cherry are interwoven with cedar, graphite, savory spice and a distinctly mineral, almost saline finish. Still youthful, it will benefit from further cellaring; the structure and balance suggest a graceful evolution over 15–25 years, with the potential for even longer aging in optimal conditions.

Production
Château Calon-Ségur’s vineyards in Saint-Estèphe sit on a thick layer of gravel deposited during the Quaternary period, over predominantly clay subsoils from the Tertiary era. This combination of deep gravel and clay, with a fine lacustrine clay layer above the gravel, provides excellent drainage yet enough water retention to sustain vines in drier conditions—ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The estate covers around 55 hectares, of which approximately 45 hectares are planted to vines. The 2017 grand vin is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Grapes are carefully harvested and sorted before vinification, with each parcel fermented separately to preserve the nuances of terroir. The wine is then aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak, allowing the oak tannins to integrate harmoniously with the grape tannins, contributing polish, complexity and longevity without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.

Food & Serving
This poised, structured Saint-Estèphe is an excellent partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye or entrecôte, venison and other game, or slow-braised beef short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with earthy flavors like truffle risotto, mushroom ragout, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its finesse and aromatic detail. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open up, softening the tannins and allowing the floral, mineral and savory notes to fully express themselves; older bottles may only need a gentle decant to remove sediment.

Producer
Château Calon-Ségur is one of the oldest and most storied estates in the Médoc, with viticultural roots that stretch back to the Middle Ages. Classified as a Third Growth (Troisième Cru Classé) in the historic 1855 Bordeaux Classification, it has long been regarded as the reference point for Saint-Estèphe’s more aristocratic side—structured yet soulful. The château is famously associated with the 18th-century owner Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Lafite and Latour, and who declared, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon,” inspiring the iconic heart on the label. Today, Calon-Ségur is celebrated for producing long-lived, deeply expressive wines that remain among the most ageworthy and admired in the appellation, with legendary vintages such as 1947, 1953 and 1982 still showing remarkable vitality.
