Description
The 2017 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova Magnum is a benchmark modern Brunello, bottled in an impressive 1.5L format that’s made for long aging and grand occasions. Tenuta Nuova was conceived as a “new estate” project to push quality to the highest level, with meticulous vineyard work and a precision-driven cellar approach. This cuvée has become one of Montalcino’s reference wines, showcasing a more contemporary, polished expression of Sangiovese while staying true to the region’s storied heritage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Tenuta Nuova shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with garnet highlights forming at the rim, revealing both concentration and the first hints of maturity. The nose is layered and captivating: waves of peppery spice, musky plum, black raspberry and crushed stone are woven together with notes of tobacco, smoke and a subtle balsamic lift. Floral tones of violet and lavender emerge with air, adding a refined, perfumed elegance.
On the palate, it is silk-smooth yet energetic, with juicy, polished fruit wrapped around a firm but well-integrated tannic spine. Dark cherry and black raspberry are accented by hints of candied citrus peel, salted licorice and exotic spice, giving a sense of an almost endless spice-box complexity. The finish is long, dry and classically Brunello in its structure, marked by balsamic herbs, mineral nuances and a lingering, savory depth. In magnum, this 2017 has excellent aging potential: it is already alluring and expressive now with proper aeration, but will continue to develop added nuance and tertiary complexity over the next 10–20 years or more.
Production
Casanova di Neri farms around 39 hectares of vineyards in Montalcino, divided into four distinct plots at roughly 350 meters above sea level, with some of the estate’s oldest vines over 50 years old. The Tenuta Nuova parcels benefit from well-drained, stony soils and a climate that balances warm, sunny days with cooler nights, allowing Sangiovese to ripen fully while retaining freshness. Grapes for this wine are carefully hand-harvested in September, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Fermentation takes place over about 23 days, allowing for a gentle yet thorough extraction of color, aroma and tannin. The wine is then aged for approximately 29 months in 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by at least another year of refinement in bottle before release, a regimen that builds structure and complexity while preserving the purity of fruit.
Food & Serving
This 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova Magnum is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or lamb shank, wild boar ragù with pappardelle, mushroom risotto, or aged Tuscan pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and finely tuned structure. In magnum format, decanting is strongly recommended—give it 1–2 hours for youthful bottles to open fully, especially in its first decade, allowing the spice, florals and minerality to unfold in the glass.
Producer
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 when Giovanni Neri acquired a large, promising estate in Montalcino with the vision of producing Brunello at the very highest level. Over the decades, the family has become one of the key names in the region, recognized for combining rigorous vineyard work with a precise, quality-driven approach in the cellar. The estate’s holdings, spread across four main vineyard areas, allow them to craft wines that capture different facets of Montalcino’s terroir, from elegance to power. As part of the newer generation of Brunello producers, Casanova di Neri played a major role in elevating the reputation of the appellation worldwide, and their flagship bottlings—such as Tenuta Nuova—are now considered among the finest expressions of Brunello di Montalcino.
