Description

The 2017 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto is a benchmark single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piemonte’s most revered traditionalists. Sourced exclusively from the famed Falletto cru in Serralunga d’Alba, this “white label” bottling captures the generosity and structure of the 2017 vintage with remarkable finesse. It is a collector’s wine that marries depth, power and precision, and stands as a striking example of why Giacosa’s name on a label is synonymous with greatness.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Barolo Falletto shows a luminous garnet core with orange-tinged rims, typical of top Nebbiolo from Serralunga. The nose is immediately alluring: ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and blackberries layered with notes of rose petals, violet, crushed stone, iron and a subtle hint of grilled herbs and sweet spices. As it opens, you find deeper nuances of tar, dried orange peel, cedar and liquorice, revealing complexity with every swirl. On the palate, this Barolo is both powerful and weightless – a signature Giacosa paradox. The fruit is concentrated yet refined, with juicy cherry and dark berry tones carried by vibrant acidity and firm, finely wrought tannins. The mineral backbone – hints of iron, salt and stone – gives the wine a chiselled, vertical feel, while savory notes of dried herbs and subtle tobacco emerge on the long, persistent finish. Still youthful, it is already harmonious but clearly built for the long haul. The 2017 Barolo Falletto has excellent aging potential, with its best drinking window likely opening from around 2027 and extending easily for two to three decades in a good cellar.

Production
Bruno Giacosa’s Barolo Falletto comes from the estate’s own Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba, one of Barolo’s most prized terroirs. The steep, sun-drenched slopes are rich in calcareous marl and clay, giving Nebbiolo its hallmark structure, minerality and aromatic intensity. Grapes are carefully hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Vinification follows traditional Piedmontese methods: extended maceration on the skins to gently extract color, tannin and aroma, followed by long maturation in large neutral Slavonian oak botti. This patient, non-interventionist approach allows the character of Falletto and the 2017 vintage to express themselves with purity and clarity.

Food & Serving
This is a serious, gastronomic Barolo that shines alongside equally refined dishes. It pairs beautifully with braised meats such as beef short ribs, osso buco, slow-cooked lamb shank or classic brasato al Barolo, as well as game birds, truffle-infused dishes, porcini mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet and texture to fully unfold; as the wine matures, a gentle 1-hour decanting is sufficient to separate any sediment and let the aromatics blossom.

Producer
The Giacosa family has been making wine in Piemonte for three generations, but it was Bruno Giacosa who elevated the estate to legendary status. Working from the cellars in Neive under the banner of Azienda Agricola Falletto, he became one of Italy’s true wine icons, mentioned in the same breath as Giuseppe Quintarelli and Edoardo Valentini. A staunch traditionalist with an uncompromising approach to quality, Bruno insisted that only the finest barrels would ever be bottled under his name, declassifying or selling off anything that did not meet his exacting standards. His deep knowledge of the best crus in Barolo and Barbaresco and his meticulous craftsmanship have made Giacosa a reference point for Nebbiolo worldwide, and Falletto remains one of the region’s most coveted and collectible wines.
