Description
The 2017 Bargylus Grand Vin de Syrie Rouge is one of the most intriguing and sought‑after wines from the Eastern Mediterranean, crafted under extraordinarily challenging conditions in Syria’s coastal mountains. This cuvée combines French winemaking savoir‑faire with a unique, high‑altitude terroir to produce a wine of remarkable depth, precision and character. Often described as the “most dangerous wine in the world” due to the logistics of producing and exporting it from Syria, Bargylus has earned cult status among sommeliers and collectors alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Bargylus Grand Vin de Syrie Rouge shows a deep, intense ruby color with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting both concentration and evolving complexity. The nose is layered and refined, offering blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and black cherry interwoven with notes of violet, graphite, cedar, cracked black pepper and subtle Eastern spice. Hints of tobacco leaf, cocoa and dried herbs emerge with air, adding further nuance.
On the palate, this is a structured yet elegant wine, with a core of dark, ripe fruit framed by finely grained tannins and vibrant acidity. Cassis, plum and blackberry compote are lifted by savory tones of olive tapenade, licorice, smoked meat and mineral notes that speak to its stony, high‑altitude origins. The oak is beautifully integrated, contributing touches of vanilla, clove and pencil shavings without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long, persistent and distinctly Mediterranean, with a salty, almost marine freshness. Drinking beautifully now with proper aeration, the 2017 has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage, gaining more tertiary complexity over time.
Production
Bargylus is sourced from estate vineyards planted on the slopes of the Jebel al‑Ansariyé mountain range, overlooking the Mediterranean near Latakia in western Syria. The vineyards sit at high altitude on limestone and clay‑limestone soils with abundant stones, benefiting from cooling sea breezes and marked diurnal temperature shifts that preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. The 2017 Grand Vin de Syrie Rouge is typically a Bordeaux‑meets‑Rhône style blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with a proportion of Merlot adding plushness and mid‑palate breadth. Grapes are meticulously hand‑harvested in small crates to ensure optimal selection, then transported under challenging conditions for vinification. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled tanks, with careful extraction to balance power and finesse. The wine is aged in French oak barrels (a portion new) for around a year to a year and a half, allowing tannins to soften and aromas to harmonize before bottling with minimal intervention to preserve the character of the terroir.
Food & Serving
The 2017 Bargylus Grand Vin de Syrie Rouge is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted lamb, spiced lamb shank, beef tenderloin, game birds, or slow‑cooked short ribs. It also shines alongside Eastern Mediterranean cuisine: lamb kebabs, moussaka, kofta, stuffed vine leaves, and dishes with roasted eggplant, herbs and sumac. Mature hard cheeses and aged Comté or Manchego are also excellent matches. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the wine to open fully and soften the tannins.
Producer
Bargylus is one of the most remarkable and improbable fine‑wine estates in the world, founded by the Saadé family, who also own Château Marsyas in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley. Established in the early 2000s, the estate revived the historic reputation of the ancient Mount Bargylus region, once celebrated in the Greco‑Roman world for its wines. Working in the midst of political instability and conflict, the family and their team manage the vineyards remotely, often having grapes shipped across borders for analysis and decisions taken from afar—yet the quality in the glass rivals top estates from classic regions. Bargylus has become a benchmark for Syrian wine and a symbol of resilience, earning praise from leading critics and securing a place on top restaurant lists across Europe and beyond.
