Description
2017 Allegrini Corvina Veronese La Poja is a benchmark single-vineyard Corvina from one of Valpolicella’s most celebrated crus. Sourced exclusively from the limestone plateau atop La Grola, this 95-point wine captures the pure, aristocratic side of Corvina in a powerful yet beautifully refined style. First released in the early 1980s and now offered through the prestigious Place de Bordeaux, La Poja has become an icon of the Veronese hills, showcasing how a traditionally blending grape can stand proudly on its own at grand-cru level.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 La Poja shows a deep, concentrated ruby red with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both richness and developing complexity. The nose rises straight from the glass with enveloping aromas of ripe yet vibrant black cherry and dark plum, followed by layers of roasted tobacco leaf, dark spices, licorice, and subtle balsamic and mineral notes that speak to its limestone origins.
On the palate, this is a Corvina of precision and elegance rather than sheer weight. The texture is silky and caressing, with fine-grained, velvety tannins framing a core of sweet, ripe red and black fruit. Notes of cocoa, clove, pepper, and dried herbs unfold gradually, supported by a lively, balancing acidity that keeps the wine fresh and dynamic. The finish is long, persistent, and poised, with a lingering echo of spice, tobacco, and balsamic depth. Still youthful in 2017, La Poja has the structure and concentration to age gracefully for 15–20 years from vintage, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuance over time.
Production
La Poja comes from a tiny, approximately 3-hectare plateau perched at the top of the famed La Grola hill in the Veronese area, where a dazzling white limestone soil reflects sunlight and ensures excellent drainage. This elevated site benefits from a perfect microclimate: abundant sun exposure, good ventilation, and significant day–night temperature shifts that preserve aromatic freshness and natural acidity. Only perfectly ripe Corvina grapes are selected, typically harvested by hand at low yields to maximize concentration and purity. In the cellar, the wine is vinified as a pure expression of Corvina, then aged for 20 months in new French Allier oak barriques, followed by 8 months in large Slavonian oak casks to refine its structure, and finally a further 10 months in bottle before release. The result is a wine that marries modern precision with traditional Veronese craftsmanship.
Food & Serving
This refined yet powerful Corvina is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes such as slow-braised beef, osso buco, roast lamb, game birds, and mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or aged Grana Padano. It also shines alongside truffle pasta, wild mushroom risotto, or dishes with roasted root vegetables and herbs, which echo its earthy, spicy nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromas to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s layered, complex bouquet.
Producer
Allegrini is one of the historic and leading families of Valpolicella, with roots in the region dating back to the 16th century and a modern reputation built on uncompromising quality and innovation. Based in the hills around Fumane, the estate has been instrumental in redefining the image of Veronese wines on the world stage, pioneering single-vineyard expressions and elevating native varieties such as Corvina to international acclaim. La Poja, born from Giovanni Allegrini’s visionary decision in 1979 to plant only Corvina on the summit of La Grola, has become one of the winery’s flagship crus and a reference point for the region. Consistently highly rated and sought after, it underscores Allegrini’s role as a standard-bearer for the elegance, structure, and age-worthiness of fine Valpolicella wines.
