Description
Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva 2016 is a classic, long‑lived Rioja crafted only in truly exceptional vintages. Sourced from old vines and given an extended rest in American oak and bottle, it captures the elegance, depth and aromatic complexity that have made Gran Reserva one of Spain’s most revered wine styles. This is a wine that speaks clearly of Rioja’s Sonsierra zone: refined, old‑vine Tempranillo with a touch of Graciano, built for both immediate pleasure and graceful aging.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Sierra Cantabria Gran Reserva shows a deep garnet core with a brick‑tinged rim, already hinting at its slow evolution and extended maturation. The nose is complex and expressive: sandalwood, incense and cigar box weave together with Asian spices, dried violets, graphite‑like minerality and layers of ripe black fruits—blackberry, black cherry and plum. Subtle notes of vanilla, cocoa and savory herbs emerge as it opens in the glass.
On the palate, the wine feels surprisingly silky and elegant at first sip, then builds in intensity and breadth. Dense, layered black and red fruit is framed by refined, ultra‑fine tannins and lively acidity, giving both volume and freshness. Notes of sweet tobacco, cedar, balsamic spice and a touch of leather unfold across a long, harmonious finish. Already delicious with proper aeration, it has the structure and balance to age beautifully for another 10–15 years, gaining even more tertiary complexity through roughly 2035.
Production
This Gran Reserva is largely Tempranillo with a small proportion of Graciano, sourced from Sierra Cantabria’s old vineyards—over 30 years of age—planted on the limestone‑clay slopes of Rioja’s Sonsierra, one of the region’s finest terroirs. The combination of altitude, significant day‑night temperature swings and poor, well‑drained soils naturally limits yields and concentrates flavor. Grapes are carefully hand‑harvested at optimal ripeness and sorted to ensure only the best bunches make it into the winery. Fermentation is carried out with close temperature control to preserve fruit purity and aromatic detail, followed by a long maceration to extract color, flavor and fine tannins. The wine then matures for 26 months in American oak barrels (around 25% new, the remainder second or third use), gaining its signature Rioja spice and polish, before being bottled unfiltered and left to rest for additional years in bottle prior to release.
Food & Serving
This is an ideal partner for classic Rioja pairings such as roasted or grilled lamb, slow‑braised beef, venison or other game dishes. It also shines with ibérico pork, earthy mushroom ragù, hard cheeses like Manchego or Comté, and richly seasoned stews. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux glasses to let the aromas unfold. Decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layered bouquet and silky texture.
Producer
Sierra Cantabria is part of the renowned Eguren family estate, a benchmark name in Rioja with several generations of winemaking heritage rooted in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Over the years, the family has become synonymous with terroir‑driven Riojas that combine traditional methods—like extended oak aging and careful blending—with meticulous vineyard work and modern precision. Their holdings in the Sonsierra zone are considered among the most privileged in Rioja, and wines such as the Gran Reserva have helped cement Sierra Cantabria’s status as a leading producer, regularly earning high praise from critics and collectors for their balance of elegance, depth and age‑worthiness.
