Description

The 2016 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Magnum is a classic expression of one of Tuscany’s most revered appellations, offered here in a magnum format that is ideal for aging and special occasions. Known for its balance of power, finesse, and longevity, it reflects both the prestige of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and the long-standing reputation of Il Poggione.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby-red colour that begins to evolve toward garnet with age. The nose is layered and refined, with notes of ripe cherry, plum, dried rose, sweet spice, tobacco, leather, and earthy undertones. On the palate, it is structured and elegant, with firm but polished tannins, bright acidity, and concentrated red-fruit character balanced by savoury complexity. The magnum format supports especially graceful development over time, and this vintage has the potential to age beautifully for many years, gaining depth and nuance with cellaring.

Production
Sourced from vineyards in Brunello di Montalcino, where the combination of altitude, sun exposure, and well-drained soils helps Sangiovese achieve both ripeness and freshness. Il Poggione is known for traditional, careful vineyard management, with harvesting carried out by hand to select healthy, fully ripe fruit. Vinification follows a classic Brunello approach, allowing the wine to develop its signature structure and aromatic complexity before extended maturation in oak. The result is a wine that expresses both terroir and the producer’s restrained, ageworthy style.

Food & Serving
This Brunello is an excellent match for rich Tuscan dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, braised beef, game, wild boar ragù, and truffle-based pasta. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and hearty mushroom dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if drinking in its youth.

Producer
Il Poggione is one of the historic estates of Montalcino, with roots dating back to the late 19th century. The winery is widely respected for helping establish the reputation of Brunello di Montalcino as one of Italy’s great fine wines, and it remains a benchmark producer in the region. Over the years, Il Poggione has earned recognition for producing wines of consistency, depth, and remarkable ageing potential.

Brunello always goes hand in hand with meat, and Il Poggione will likewise be a perfect partner for the main course—whether the menu features delicious game, beef, or something from the grill. Made in a classic style, it expresses Sangiovese in the finest way with intensity, structure, and that almost dusty spice found in these wines, making Il Poggione a perfect bottle for anyone who loves Tuscan wines.

And a Magnum is always a good thing!
