Description
The 2016 Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is a deeply refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Italy’s most visionary producers. Sourced from the renowned Rennina parcel beside the ancient church of Santa Restituta, this Brunello marries Tuscan terroir with Gaja’s uncompromising pursuit of precision and elegance. The 2016 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional in Montalcino, and this wine captures that perfect alignment of climate, fruit purity and structure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Rennina shows a luminous, deep garnet core with brick-red hues at the rim, hinting at both intensity and classic Brunello typicity. The nose is layered and complex, opening with balsamic herbs, dried violets and freshly crushed blackberries, followed by notes of wild cherry, blood orange zest, sweet tobacco, cedar and a subtle hint of spice and earth.
On the palate, the wine is focused, vibrant and firmly structured, with an almost architectural precision. Ripe yet taut red and black berry fruits are woven with savory tones of dried herbs, tea leaf and a touch of licorice. Fine, tightly knit tannins form a “wall” of structure that grips the senses now, but they are ultra-refined and promise superb integration with time. The acidity is lively and perfectly balanced, driving a long, mineral-inflected finish. Still youthful and primary, this 2016 Rennina has significant aging potential; it will reward patience over 12–20 years, gaining truffle, leather and forest floor complexity as it matures.
Production
The grapes for Rennina come from the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in the southwestern part of Montalcino, where Sangiovese thrives on a mosaic of galestro (marl), limestone and clay soils at ideal altitudes that ensure excellent drainage, slow ripening and intense aromatic development. Careful vineyard work, including yield reduction and meticulous selection, ensures only perfectly ripe Sangiovese clusters are harvested—typically by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture each plot’s character. In the cellar, traditional Brunello methods are refined by Gaja’s precision: gentle fermentation and maceration extract fine tannins and pure fruit, followed by extended aging in carefully chosen oak (usually a mix of large casks and smaller barrels) and bottle, allowing the wine to harmonize without losing its freshness and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This Brunello is a natural partner for richly flavored Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised lamb shank, wild boar ragù, truffle risotto or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Toscano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the balsamic, floral and dark berry notes to fully unfurl; as it ages, a shorter decant or careful service directly from the bottle will suffice.
Producer
Gaja is one of Italy’s most influential and revered wine families, with roots dating back to 1859 in Barbaresco, Piedmont. Under Angelo Gaja’s leadership from the 1960s onward, the estate became a benchmark for quality and innovation, helping redefine Italian fine wine on the world stage through meticulous vineyard management, yield control and forward-thinking winemaking. The acquisition of the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in Montalcino marked a pivotal expansion into Tuscany, where Gaja applies the same rigor to Brunello as to its famed Barbaresco crus. Rennina, together with Sugarille, stands as one of the flagship Brunelli of the estate, consistently earning international acclaim and underscoring Gaja’s role as a standard-bearer for elegance, longevity and terroir-driven wines in Italy.
