Description

2016 Domaine Roches Neuves Amphore Rouge Outre Terre is a striking, amphora-aged Cabernet Franc from the heart of Saumur-Champigny in the Loire Valley. Crafted by the visionary Thierry Germain, it marries delicacy and intensity in a style that is both modern and deeply rooted in tradition. Its combination of biodynamic farming, Georgian amphorae and limestone terroir makes it a highly distinctive, terroir-driven red.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this wine shows a luminous, translucent ruby hue that immediately signals finesse rather than power. The nose is refined and floral, with pronounced peony and violets, lifted red fruit, and a clear mineral streak that recalls wet stone and chalk. Subtle herbal tones and a gentle earthiness sit in the background, adding complexity without weighing the wine down. On the palate, Amphore Rouge Outre Terre is both concentrated and airy, offering a vivid core of red and orchard fruits – think redcurrant, crunchy red apple and hints of citrus peel that bring a saline, almost tonic-like freshness. The texture is fine and tightly knit, with silky yet present tannins and a precise acidity that keeps everything in perfect balance. A long, persistent finish shows a delicate, appetising bitterness that enhances the sense of freshness rather than dryness. With its structure and purity of fruit, this 2016 has excellent aging potential; it should drink beautifully now with a brief decant, but will gain in complexity and tertiary nuances over the next 8–12 years.

Production
The fruit comes from a tiny 0.6-hectare parcel of 20-year-old Cabernet Franc vines rooted in sandy soils over a limestone subsoil at Jeune de Carrefour, just outside Saumur. This is classic Saumur-Champigny terroir: well-drained, with a mild, Loire-influenced climate and south-facing aspects that allow Cabernet Franc to ripen fully while retaining tension and aromatic lift. Farmed biodynamically, the vines are tended with meticulous care, with low yields and selective harvesting by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are brought to the cellar. Fermentation and maceration take place in 800-liter Georgian amphorae, buried or held in the cool estate cellars to maintain a stable, gentle environment and to preserve purity and texture. After its time in amphora, the wine is aged for around 12 months in oak barrels, adding subtle depth and polish without overshadowing the crystalline expression of fruit and minerality.

Food & Serving
This Amphore Rouge Outre Terre is a versatile partner at the table, particularly well suited to refined meat dishes and delicately prepared game. Try it with roast venison, wild duck or guinea fowl, or more classic pairings such as grilled or roasted beef and pork with herbs and root vegetables. It also works beautifully with poultry in mushroom-based sauces and with a board of mild, soft cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or semi-soft goat’s cheese from the Loire. Serve at 14–16°C, slightly cooler than many full-bodied reds to highlight its freshness and floral character. A gentle decant of 1–2 hours helps open up the aromatic profile and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed in its youth.

Producer
Domaine Roches Neuves was founded by Thierry Germain, who took the helm at the estate at just 23 years old with the clear ambition of crafting some of the Loire’s most expressive and elegant Cabernet Franc. Over the years he has transformed the property into one of Saumur-Champigny’s reference producers, championing biodynamic viticulture and a philosophy of precision, low yields and terroir transparency. The domaine’s vineyards, spread across some of the appellation’s finest limestone and sandy-limestone sites, are cultivated with deep respect for nature, and the wines have become benchmarks for their purity, floral finesse and energy. Thierry’s pioneering use of amphorae and his insistence on minimal intervention in the cellar have earned him wide acclaim from critics and wine lovers alike, securing Domaine Roches Neuves a leading role in the modern renaissance of Loire reds.
