Description

The 2016 Domaine Jacques Prieur Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is a pure expression of Pinot Noir from one of Corton’s most esteemed slopes. Sourced from a tiny 0.73-hectare parcel, this is a deeply structured, ageworthy red that marries classical Burgundy elegance with the power typical of Corton. The warm, dry 2016 growing season—despite spring frost challenges—has yielded a wine of concentration, precision, and remarkable purity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful intensity at the core and a delicate garnet rim developing with age. The nose opens with layers of dark cherry, black raspberry, and ripe red currant, supported by violet, rose petal, and subtle forest floor. With air, more complex aromas emerge: warm spices, cocoa nib, fine cedar, and a trace of flint and iron that speaks clearly of Corton’s hillside terroir. On the palate, this is both powerful and refined: dense, finely woven fruit wrapped around a firm yet polished tannic structure. Juicy red and black cherry, wild strawberry, and crunchy plum are lifted by fresh, vibrant acidity, while notes of licorice, spice, and mineral drive the long, persistent finish. The oak is present but beautifully integrated, giving gentle toast and sweet spice rather than dominating the fruit. Still youthful, the wine has the backbone and concentration to age gracefully; it will reward patience over 10–20 years from vintage, gaining in silkiness, complexity, and tertiary nuances of truffle, undergrowth, and dried flowers.

Production
This Grand Cru comes from a small 0.73-hectare plot on the famed Corton hill, where the Grands Crus sit on southeast-facing slopes. The exposure maximizes morning and midday sun, while the stony clay-limestone soils promote efficient drainage and reflect heat, fostering even and relatively early ripening in most seasons. In 2016, after a mild winter and a warm April, frost with high humidity damaged some of the best-exposed parcels, naturally limiting yields but concentrating the remaining fruit. Following a hot, dry summer, harvest began on 20 September under excellent sanitary conditions. Grapes were hand-picked, placed in small crates to avoid crushing, then carefully sorted and fully destemmed. Fermentation took place in open oak vats with temperature control, with a 21-day maceration on the skins. Twice-daily pigeage (cap punching) ensured gentle extraction of color, tannin, and aroma. The wine then underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and was aged entirely in oak barrels, allowing it to develop texture, depth, and aromatic complexity while preserving its Burgundian finesse.

Food & Serving
This Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru is a superb partner for refined yet flavorful dishes: think roast duck with cherries, braised lamb shoulder, venison, or pigeon, as well as classic Burgundian fare like coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon made with high-quality meat. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F); too warm and the alcohol will dominate, too cool and the complexity will close down. For current or near-term drinking, decant 1–2 hours in advance to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles should be decanted gently just before serving, mainly to remove any sediment.
