Description

The 2016 Domaine Jacques Prieur Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a powerful, classically structured Burgundy from one of the most revered walled vineyards in the world. Crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grown on Jacques Prieur’s 1.28-hectare plot within the famous Clos, this wine captures the gravitas, depth and age‑worthy character that Clos Vougeot is known for. Born from a challenging yet ultimately excellent vintage, it balances intensity with precision and refinement.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Clos Vougeot shows a deep ruby to garnet hue, with youthful brightness at the rim that hints at its ongoing evolution. The nose is complex and expressive: dark cherries, wild strawberries and blackberries layered with notes of violet, forest floor, moist earth and a touch of graphite, framed by well-integrated oak tones of clove, cedar and a subtle toasty smokiness. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied for Pinot Noir, with a firm, authoritative structure that is typical of the clay-rich soils in this part of the Clos. Expect concentrated red and black berry fruit, black cherry and ripe raspberry alongside savory tones of truffle, spice, dried herbs and a faint gamey nuance as it opens up. The tannins are robust yet finely grained, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and long on the finish. Still youthful, the 2016 has significant aging potential; it will benefit from cellaring and should continue to develop added complexity over 10–20 years from vintage, depending on storage conditions.

Production
This Grand Cru comes from a 1.28-hectare holding within the historic 50-hectare Clos Vougeot, originally established by the Cîteaux monks. Here, the terroir is marked by clay-rich soils over limestone, giving naturally powerful, structured wines with depth and a slightly rustic edge in their youth. In 2016, after a mild winter and warm early spring, severe frost at the end of April reduced yields significantly, especially on the best-exposed parcels, but the remaining grapes benefited from a hot, dry summer that ensured excellent ripeness. The Pinot Noir grapes were hand-harvested into small crates, meticulously sorted and fully destemmed. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled open oak vats, with a 20-day maceration on the skins and twice-daily pigeage to gently extract color, flavor and tannin. The wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and was then aged for 20 months in oak barrels, adding polish and complexity while respecting the character of the fruit and the vineyard.

Food & Serving
Serve this Clos Vougeot Grand Cru with refined, savory dishes that can stand up to its structure and depth: roast duck, venison, pigeon, beef Wellington, rack of lamb or game birds with mushroom jus all work beautifully. It is also outstanding with dishes featuring truffles, wild mushrooms, and slow-braised meats, as well as aged, hard cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open and soften; older bottles should be decanted more gently and briefly, primarily to remove any sediment.
