Description
2016 Domaine Huet Vouvray Cuvée Constance is one of the Loire Valley’s true icons of sweet wine – a rare, late-harvest Chenin Blanc that is only produced in the very best vintages. Drawn from Huet’s historic vineyards in Vouvray, this cuvée marries luxurious sweetness with the estate’s signature, glistening acidity. It’s a wine that speaks as much of place and history as it does of pure pleasure in the glass. Cuvée Constance is Domaine Huet’s flagship noble-sweet wine, crafted in tiny quantities and revered by collectors worldwide for its depth, precision and longevity. Sourced from the estate’s three great terroirs – Le Mont, Le Haut-Lieu and Clos du Bourg – it showcases the extraordinary versatility of Chenin Blanc in Vouvray’s cool climate. Since its creation, this cuvée has become a benchmark for sweet Loire wines, regularly cited among the world’s great dessert wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2016 Cuvée Constance shines a deep orange to amber hue, with copper and golden reflections that hint at both concentration and evolution. The color is rich and inviting, clinging to the sides of the glass with slow, elegant legs.
The nose is intense yet refined, layering aromas of sun-dried raisins, ultra-ripe stone fruits like apricot and mirabelle plum, and warm caramel notes. These richer tones are lifted by a vibrant thread of citrus – candied orange peel, lemon zest – along with delicate spice and a subtle, peppery edge, giving the bouquet both complexity and tension.
On the palate, the wine is silky, rounded and deeply textured, with a dense core of sweet, ripe fruit that never feels heavy. Flavors of dried apricot, quince paste, honey and golden raisins unfold in waves, supported by a line of bright, mouthwatering acidity. Fine, almost powdery tannins and a salty, mineral undercurrent add grip and structure, while a gentle citrus bitterness – think lemon pith – brings a beautifully cleansing snap to the long, lingering finish.
The 2016 vintage offers both immediate seduction and serious aging potential. While already harmonious and expressive, this Cuvée Constance is built to evolve gracefully for decades, developing more honeyed, nutty and truffled nuances over 20–30 years or more in a cool cellar.
Production
Domaine Huet’s vineyards in Vouvray lie on the cooler stretches of the Loire east of Tours, rooted in classic tuffeau limestone and clay soils that are perfectly suited to Chenin Blanc. The estate’s three celebrated sites – Le Mont, Le Haut-Lieu and Clos du Bourg (the latter walled in stone) – each contribute their own expression of minerality and ripeness to the blend. Farmed biodynamically since 1990, the vines are cultivated with deep respect for the soil and ecosystem, allowing Chenin to fully express its authenticity and tension. Grapes destined for Cuvée Constance are harvested by hand in successive passes, selecting only the most concentrated, botrytised and late-harvest berries from the best parcels in exceptional years. In the cellar, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of old demi-muid oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation is blocked to preserve the wine’s crystalline freshness, ensuring that the lush sweetness is always balanced by vivid acidity and a precise, mineral backbone.
Food & Serving
This noble-sweet Vouvray is a natural partner for rich, complex dishes, whether savory or sweet. Pair it with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Fourme d’Ambert, foie gras terrine, or roast poultry with fruit-based sauces for a luxurious contrast of salty and sweet. On the dessert side, it shines with tarte Tatin, almond tart, crème brûlée, or desserts featuring apricot, pear, quince or citrus. Serve lightly chilled, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow the aromatic complexity to fully unfold. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 30–45 minutes before serving, or gently carafing, can help the wine reveal its layers, especially as it gains bottle age.
