Description
2016 Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac Grand Cru Classé is a standout expression of Bordeaux Left Bank class, combining Pauillac power with remarkable freshness and precision. As one of the most admired estates in the appellation, it offers a distinctive blend of depth, structure and finesse that has made it a benchmark among modern Bordeaux wines.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby-garnet colour with excellent concentration. The nose is layered and poised, unfolding with blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, violets and subtle earthy spice, while the palate is full-bodied and structured, with ripe dark fruit, firm tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish.
2016 is widely considered an age-worthy vintage for Bordeaux, and this wine has the backbone to develop beautifully over many years. With cellaring, it should gain even greater complexity, bringing out notes of tobacco, leather, truffle and dried herbs.
Production
Pontet-Canet is located in Pauillac on Bordeaux’s gravel-rich Left Bank, where the well-draining soils and maritime influence help produce wines with power, aromatic clarity and longevity. The estate is known for meticulous vineyard work and a strong commitment to biodynamic farming, with harvesting typically carried out by hand to ensure optimal fruit selection. Vinification is aimed at preserving purity and structure, with careful fermentation and élevage to build texture and precision.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young, to allow the wine to open fully and soften its tannins.
Producer
Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most respected estates and has long held Grand Cru Classé status from the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Under modern stewardship, it has earned particular acclaim for its biodynamic approach and consistently expressive wines, becoming a reference point in the Médoc for quality, sustainability and terroir-driven winemaking.
